Get It
Michael Jackson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't let it get you down
When you're not on top
A winner stumbles too
But gets up and never stops, no

Ain't it a doggone shame?
Lovin' ain't a friendly game
Don't let it get you down, oh no

Don't let it get you down
When the cards are marked
Pick up what's let and walk away (pick it up, pick it up)
Before you lose your heart (don't look back, girl)

Ain't it a doggone shame?
Lovin' ain't a friendly game
Don't let it get you down (oh, no)
Oh, no (don't let it)

Look at me
Don't it seem like I know what I'm talking about?
Talk to me
Let me be, be the one that can straighten it out, girl

(Don't let it get you down)
(Oh, no, don't let it)
(Don't let it get you down)
(Oh, no, don't let it)

Ain't it a doggone shame?
Lovin' ain't a friendly game
Don't let it get you down (oh, no, don't let it)

I can bring you sunshine, make you happy
(I can bring you sunshine)
Ain't no cloud skies hanging over me, yeah

Don't let it get you down

Don't let it get you down
You can start again
Now yesterday is gone
Let tomorrow be your friend
(Don't look back, girl) hey, don't look back, girl
My love is straight ahead
Don't let it get you down (oh, no)
Oh, no (don't let it)

Look at me
Don't it seem like I know what I'm talking about?
Talk to me
Let me be, be the one that can straighten it out, girl

I can straighten it out girl, yeah
(Don't let it get you down, oh, no, don't let it)
I can't straighten it out, girl, come on

Don't let it, let it, let it (don't let it get you down, oh, no, don't let it)
Don't let it, let it, let it
No, don't let it (don't let it get you down, oh, no, don't let it)
Don't let it get you down
Don't let it, let it, let it (don't let it get you down, oh, no, don't let it)
Don't let it, let it, let it
Don't let it get you down, come on (oh, no, don't let it)
Don't let it get you down, yeah (oh, no, don't let it)
Yeah, ha
Yeah, come on, baby (don't let it get you down, oh, no, don't let it)
Don't let it get you down (oh, no, don't let it)

Come on, sugar
Yeah, woo (don't let it get you down, oh, no, don't let it)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Michael Jackson’s “Get It” insistently delivers a message of overcoming obstacles in love and life. The first verse encourages the listener not to be discouraged by not being on top as even winners stumble and get up again. In the second verse, Jackson implores the listener to walk away from a situation where love seems to be a losing game. He acknowledges that love can be cruel and has no mercy, but the solution is to not let it get you down. With the chorus repeated several times, the song becomes a self-empowerment anthem reminding us to live in the present moment and not let past failures bring us down. The bridge strongly reinforces Jackson's belief that he is a good listener and can help the listener by being the one who can straighten things out.

Throughout the song, the use of the phrase "dog-gone shame" implies a sense of remorse, as if love is something that is out of the lovers control, with the poignancy of the hook being reinforced by the optimistic and affirmative delivery of Jackson. The song's up-tempo and lively beat and melody hold a special appeal, especially set against Jackson's authoritative vocal delivery. Overall "Get It" is not just another love song, it's a song imbued with important life lessons that can help anyone navigate the ups and downs of life.

[SW] ... Miss Lady Girl
Is putting her love on the shelf
Cause she don't want
To be hurt by nobody else

She's taken her heart
And put it away under lock and key
But it's high time
Miss Lady Girl sets her heart free and gives her love to me

[MJ] ... Some think that diamond rings, fancy cars
Will make a big impression
But I know that all she needs is my tender
Love and affection
Cause she still says

That no one's gonna get it
No one's gonna get it, oh no
But someone's gotta get it

And I feel that I will be the one who will

[SW] ... No one's gonna get it
No one's gonna get it, oh no
But someone's gotta get it
And I know that I will be the one who will

[MJ] ... Gonna get it, her love
[SW] ... Gonna get it, her kisses
[MJ] ... Gonna get it, her heart
[BOTH] ... Gonna get it, get it

[MJ] ... Miss Lady Girl
Has buried her feelings deep inside
Cause she don't want
To be taken for another ride

She's sick and tired
of being on that lonely merry-go-round
She just don't know
That the ultimate love
Of her life is about to be found

[SW] ... They think that ready cash, flashy clothes
Will fill her life with laughter

But I've got the very thing that she needs
True love forever after
Then no more will she say

That no one's gonna get it
No one's gonna get it, oh no
But someone's gotta get it
And I feel that I will be the one who will

[MJ] ... No one's gonna got it
No one's gonna get It, oh no
But someone's gonna get it
And I know that I will be the one who will

Gonna get it, her love
Gonna get it, her kisses
Gonna get it, her heart
Gonna get it, gonna get it, [etc.]

Michael during the Bad era was untouchable. His voice was fuller, his dancing was fierce and sharp. He was at his absolute best.

I think the Thriller ,to me was when he was at his absolute best. His range was at the highest it had ever been since he was a kid. His dance moves were smooth with a fluid-like agility as well.

@chapter404th

His vocals were top notch during OTW, Triumph and Thriller
