Tabloid Junkie
Michael Jackson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

"In the news today, from the strange and weird fact file
Singer Michael Jackson sleeps in an oxygen chamber
The singer says that the hyperbaric chamber
Has the benefit of reversing the aging process"

Speculate to break the one you hate
Circulate the lie you confiscate
Assassinate and mutilate
As the hounding media in hysteria
Who's the next for you to resurrect
JFK exposed the CIA
Truth be told the grassy knoll
As the blackmail story in all your glory

It's slander
You say it's not a sword
But with your pen you torture men
You'd crucify the Lord
And you don't have to read it, read it
And you don't have to eat it, eat it
To buy it is to feed it, feed it
So why do we keep foolin' ourselves

Just because you read it in a magazine
Or see it on the TV screen
Don't make it factual
Though everybody wants to read all about it
Just because you read it in a magazine
Or see it on the TV screen
Don't make it factual, actual
They say he's homosexual

In the hood
Frame him if you could
Shoot to kill
To blame him if you will
If he dies sympathize
Such false witnesses
Damn self righteousness
In the black
Stab me in the back
In the face
To lie and shame the race
Heroine and Marilyn
As the headline stories of
All your glory

It's slander
With the words you use
You're a parasite in black and white
Do anything for news
And you don't go and buy it, buy it
And they won't glorify it, 'fy it
To read it sanctifies it, 'fies it
Then why do we keep foolin' ourselves
Just because you read it in a magazine
Or see it on the TV screen
Don't make it factual
Everybody wants to read all about it
Just because you read it in a magazine
Or see it on the TV screen
Don't make it factual
See, but everybody wants to believe all about it

Just because you read it in a magazine
Or see it on the TV screen
Don't make it factual
See, but everybody wants to believe all about it
Just because you read it in a magazine
Or see it on the TV screen
Don't make it factual, actual
She's blonde and she's bisexual

"In just sixty seconds, a new Michael Jackson story"

Scandal
With the words you use
You're a parasite in black and white
Do anything for news
And you don't go and buy it, buy it
And they won't glorify it, 'fy it
To read it sanctifies it, 'fies it
Why do we keep foolin' ourselves
Slander
You say it's not a sin
But with your pen you torture men
Then why do we keep foolin' ourselves

Just because you read it in a magazine
Or see it on the TV screen
Don't make it factual
Though everybody wants to read all about it
Just because you read it in a magazine
Or see it on the TV screen
Don't make it factual
See, but everybody wants to read all about it

Just because you read it in a magazine
Or see it on the TV screen
Don't make it factual
Just because you read it in a magazine
Or see it on the TV screen
Don't make it factual
You better believe me

Just because you read it in a magazine
Or see it on the TV screen

Don't make it factual, actual
You're so damn disrespectable

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Michael Jackson's "Tabloid Junkie" shed light on the dangers of the media and the constant spreading of slanderous rumors about famous individuals without any factual basis. The verse starts by reporting a headline about how Michael Jackson sleeps in an oxygen chamber to prevent aging. The verse then moves on to criticize the media, accusing them of causing a commotion over fiction to sell news, all at the expense of the celebrities they target. The chorus then repeats the theme of the unreliability of the news reported and how people fall for it regardless, leading to misinformation.

The second verse continues to hammer the idea of the media's abuse of power, stating that they're ready to destroy someone's reputation, even if it means using false witnesses as sources. It then alludes to the stereotypes that the media promotes about black and gay individuals, claiming that they'll frame and kill anyone to sell their stories, even their peers. The underlying message in "Tabloid Junkie" is that people shouldn't believe everything they read or see.

HIStory always stood out as an unusual album to me.
It's the only record I know of that's both a best hits and completely new studio album in one.
While previous albums were very distinct in their flavour, HIStory was a mish-mash of different genres and significantly less pop than the likes of thriller and bad; HIStory songs are seldom played on the radio and most people only remember his 80's hits.

Yet in fan communities, HIStory seems to be one of the most beloved of his albums and I believe it was because the album was made for them; HIStory was by far his most personal and lyrically intensive album.

While it may fly over the heads of casual pop listeners, for devout fans, HIStory is a window into the mind of Michael Jackson, his fears and his frustrations.
The album wasn't about making money (but of course it did), it was about telling a story.

His story.
