On October 12, 2009 after the song was released, it was reported that the song was co-written with Paul Anka in 1983, for a duet between him and Michael in his album Walk a Fine Line, albeit with different lyrics and title. This version was included as the song "I Never Heard" on the 1991 album I Wasn’t Born Yesterday by Sa-Fire, however this song has partially different lyrics.
While the exact date of recording is unknown, some sources claimed that it was a rejected recording from Dangerous, while co-author Paul Anka has stated that it was recorded in 1983.
The original recording of "This Is It" was apparently found in a box of tapes with only Jackson's voice and a piano accompaniment. Strings were then added to the bare-bones recording, along with backing vocals from Jackson's brothers.

My uncle was in control of the lights for the rehearsal, and he told me that watching him dance was like magic, and he said that Michael thanked the whole crew after, and my Uncle said alot of stars he tours with dont even thank the crew.
