Brand New Day
Michael Jackson feat. Diana Ross Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everybody look around
'Cause there's a reason to rejoice you see
Everybody come out
And let's commence to singing joyfully
Everybody look up
And feel the hope that we've been waiting for

Everybody's glad
Because our silent fear and dread is gone
Freedom, you see, has got our hearts singing so joyfully
Just look about
You owe it to yourself to check it out
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Can't you feel a brand new day?

Everybody be glad
Because the sun is shining just for us
Everybody wake up
Into the morning into happiness

Hello world
It's like a different way of living now
And thank you world
We always knew that we'd be free somehow
In harmony
And show the world that we've got liberty

It's such a change
For us to live so independently
Freedom, you see, has got our hearts singing so joyfully
Just look about
You owe it to yourself to check it out
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Can't you feel a brand new day?

Everybody be glad
Because the sun is shining just for us
Everybody wake up
Into the morning into happiness
Hello world
It's like a different way of living now
And thank you world
We always knew that we'd be free somehow
In harmony
And show the world that we've got liberty

It's such a change
For us to live so independently
Freedom, you see, has got our hearts singing so joyfully
Just look about
You owe it to yourself to check it out
Can't you feel a brand new day?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Michael Jackson feat. Diana Ross's song "A Brand New Day" are a celebration of freedom and liberation. The song encourages everyone to come out and rejoice, to feel the hope that comes with liberty. The lyrics are reminiscent of the civil rights movement of the 1960s, where people fought and died for their right to be free from oppression, a struggle that echoes into the present day.

The opening lines of the song urge everyone to look around and see the "joyful" reason to celebrate. The lyrics encourage people to wake up and "commence to singing joyfully" while feeling the hope that comes with freedom. The chorus repeats the phrase "Can't you feel a brand new day?" as a call to action, urging listeners to embrace the future with open hearts and minds.

The song speaks to the power of optimism and hope, that even in the darkest times, there is light at the end of the tunnel. The lyrics urge us to celebrate the sun shining just for us, waking up into the morning of happiness, dancing in harmony, and show the world that we've got liberty. The song is a powerful anthem that invites people into being the change they want to see in the world.

This movie is underrated. It’s so full of symbolism, and beauty. It’s a perfect urban retelling of the story that brought Dorothy’s silver shoes back. I appreciate it now more as an adult, as I can catch the deeper meanings and symbolism in it.

The criticisms of the movie at the time was 1. Diana being to old for the part 2. the movie was shot very dark, really undermining the set designs and the "look" of the movie 3. Many thought it wasn't a movie for kids, it was seen as almost too scary for children. I think all of the criticisms were fair but the music was excellent and for me makes up for a lot. I also think Lena Horne as Glenda the good witch knocked it out of the park.

I absolutely loved this movie as a child a ran the VHS until the film came out lol I watch the movie again at a time when I truly needed to hear what was going on with me and how to help pull myself out of depression and crippling anxiety. Never caught on to any of the stuff as a kid but as an adult, it changed my life.

Truth

This song is touching because it is really about the African American struggle for Civil Rights and the end of overt segregation and discrimination in this country. Even though much healing remained to be seen, we had turned a corner when this movie was made.

Yup! this song is like the Wiz's version of Glory from Selma

Chaos & Retribution

The only thing black american did was build a safe haven and superpower for others to enjoy. "The alien and foreigner will rule over you" "you will be the tail and they will be the head" "Be in the world but not of it." you are delusional if you believe anything else. This song to me represents when black american can truly get away from foreigners and aliens and go to our promised land.
