To Love Somebody
Michael Johns Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a light
A certain kind of light
That never shone on me
I want my life to be
Lived with you, lived with you
There's a way
Evreybody say
To do each and every little thing
But what does it bring
If I ain't got you, if I ain't got

You don't know what it's like
Baby, You don't know what it's like
To love somebody, to love somebody
The way I love you

In my brain
I see your face again
I know my frame of mind
You ain't got to be so blind
And I'm blind, so very blind
I'm a man
Can't you see what I am
I live and breathe for you
But what good does it do
If I ain't got you,if I ain't got you

You don't know what it's like
Baby you don't know what it's like
To love somebody, to love somebody
The way I love you

You don't know what it's like
Baby, You don't know what it's like
To love somebody, to love somebody
You don't know what it's like
Baby, You don't know what it's like

To love somebody, to love somebody
The way I love you

Overall Meaning

Michael Johns's song "To Love Somebody" is a love ballad that talks about the desperation and longing of a man who desires to be with the woman he loves. The first stanza of the song describes the light that has never shone on him before, and he wants his life to be lived with his lover. The second stanza talks about the different ways people suggest doing things but questions what purpose it serves if he doesn't have his lover. The chorus of the song highlights the intensity of his love, expressing that his lover doesn't know what it's like to be loved the way he loves her. He further emphasizes his love in the third stanza, stating that he can't get her out of his mind, and his love for her is so strong that he can't see anything else. He concludes by reminding her that she does not know what it's like to love somebody the way he does.

The lyrics of "To Love Somebody" express timeless sentiments of unrequited love that persists through time. The song was written by Barry Gibb and Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees in 1967 for Otis Redding, but he died before he could sing it. The song became a global hit and has been covered by several legendary artists such as Janis Joplin, Nina Simone, and Jimmy Somerville.

This is by far my favorite version of this song, I was so sad when I heard of his passing. I was one of the few who bought his album when it came out and was disappointed he didn't get as much recognition for being as talented a singer as he was. I always wanted to hear him live and I can't believe I won't ever get the chance. RIP Michael Johns <3

Like everyone else, I too was shocked when I heard of his passing as well. I had the pleasure of meeting Michael (and the other contestants) backstage on the Idol tour during his year and on top of the fact he was the nicest one there, we stayed in touch by email and MySpace (the biggest thing at the time) and became pretty good friends. I remember at the backstage meeting, I did everything I could just to keep him talking. I loved hearing that accent in person! Miss him terribly!
