Overall Meaning

"The Trial" is a song that is featured in Pink Floyd's album "The Wall". When I was around 10, me and my family went to saw Waters' shows in Italy twice, around 2010. I rememeber sometimes looking away from the big screens and then having nightmares at home. But it was an amazing experience, and Floyd have always been one of my favourite bands ever for sure.. but that was terrifying 😅

Honestly tearing down the wall is what he needed, but the way I interpret it that in itself isn't the punishment. It's having the wall torn down by others instead of doing it himself. Had he been able to work on it himself, ideally sooner than later, he could have taken it one step at a time. Instead now he's been stripped of his maladapted coping mechanism forcibly by others. Sure, this can still lead to healing in the long run, but it's less 'getting the process started and getting your feet wet' like Pink likely would have prefered and more 'getting tossed into the deep end of an olympic sized swimming pool against your will' if that makes even a lick of sense. It almost reads like a cautionary tale to me, to be wary of and work on one's own problems (ideally with help from loved ones like the 'bleeding hearts and artists') before others who don't have your well being in mind bring them into the light kicking and screaming.

Yes, it’s what he needed. But I’ve been there to a degree with my mental health issues and part of those issues make me become somewhat of a shut in. There comes a point in a nervous breakdown where you realize your suffering, isolation, defense mechanisms, justifications, and irrational beliefs, made you into a shitty person. At least, this was my experience. The isolation brings a weird sort of comfort. You feel safe inside yourself but when you realize that you may have hurt others, it becomes hard to find that comfort in your vices, and your mind can sort of rip you out of them. This usually manifests in an emotional outburst of some kind where you feel all the pain you were hiding from all along. Sometimes this is unfortunately in front of roommates and neighbors, at least in my case. It feels like a punishment but it’s necessary to move forward.

I always loved the mature detail of the teacher being manipulated and pupeteered by his wife. He's the spitting example of what The Wall is all about. Abuse and inescapable trauma turning someone coldhearted. Could be seen as the system teaching people to break eachother for the sake of becoming part of the machine (wife abuses her vulnerable husband, who takes it out on his students) I feel sympathy for him, even though hes turned to a psychopath.

I still find it amazing that Alan Parker didn’t actually like how the film came out and it wasn’t what he imagined. As a filmmaker, that is so natural, but it makes me wonder how it was in his head. This is already and will always be a masterpiece in my eyes, imagine what it was like in his brain. He’s such a terrific filmmaker.

The whole thing was unnerving and all three fell out Scarfe and Waters worked through their issues and became friends again but I don't think Scarfe or Waters ever made amends with Alan Parker and Parker made no attempt on his end to bury the hatchet either.

This is still a masterpiece. Love this song on the album so much. When the mother came in and “birthed” him it really hit me hard and made me cry. And then his reaction to all that degradation hes endured his whole life with “I am crazy”, his mental health is so affected by these people in his life and it hurts so much. And then of course, the worm coming in with that rocking guitar, just perfect. To have the willpower and motivation to turn his suffering into art is so so admirable and amazing

Still got this film on DVD, I bought it for my dad about 15 years ago and we watched it every week, but he passed away in 2010 and i haven't seen it since until coming across this. His mother wasn’t able to grieve her husband’s death, and her son became a link, a transitional object that contained her repressed grief and anger of her unprocessed loss, and also the guilt of not being enough for his mom. When a mother is emotionally frozen like this, a child always thinks it’s his fault. And this sowed seeds of guilt in him eventually with new layers of guilt bringing him to this trial

Honestly I find this film and the music as well, traumatic. My mother's kid brother, who is a chronic, psychotically deranged drunkard and a backstabbing scoundrel, actually loved it. . . He relished listening to this. . . . And the music itself seemed to feed the demons inside him.

I may harbor a kind of primordial fear or trauma about him, for he almost slashed my mother's throat right in front of us when we were kids then. But now, not anymore. I'm enraged.

I'm going to assume that anyone here is familiar with the inside art of this double album. Anyway, my best friend got a hold of my new The Wall album and used all of the pictures to tell a story about me. "Stephanie lives here (jail). Sometimes here (isolation room). People come from miles around (hammers) to watch her dance (angry woman), eat worms (pile of worms) and act like an a** (arrow drawn to giant bum above the hammers). There was a time crunch so they had to repurpose some old Scarfe animations. I wish him and his team had more time. I would have loved a Wall film that was either all Scarfe animation or a combination of his work and a concert film of a Wall show.

@@legodroideka5505 it was conceived as both a movie and an album at the same time by Roger Waters, a lot of the artwork was supposed to be reused for the movie but it was stolen so a lot of things had to be redrawn quickly resulting in somewhat inferior Trial. Don't get me wrong tho it's still an awesome piece of animation
