Knott's music has not been without controversy in Christian circles, particularly due to profanity in the song "Rocket and a Bomb" (from the self-titled release of his former band Aunt Bettys) and original artwork in that album of Jesus Christ as a bartender.
Knott explained some of his views in an interview with HM Magazine, saying "Basically, I'm a human being and I believe in Christ, period. It doesn't make my life rosy, it doesn't make my life terrible, it doesn't do anything with that. I know Christ."
Michael Knott is also the founder of the now defunct independent record label, Blonde Vinyl Records.

Cast Me Away
Michael Knott Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
When I say I'm living with an angel that's you
And I'm gonna burn you out
And I'm gonna burn you down
And I'm gonna burn you out
And I'm gonna burn you down
You know who I mean
And I'm gonna burn you out
And I'm gonna burn you up
And I'm gonna burn you out
Cast me away today
Save yourself
Cast me away today
Save yourself
Anyway you can
I'm gonna burn you out
I'm gonna burn you down
I'm gonna burn you out
I'm gonna burn you down
The song “Cast Me Away” by Michael Knott tells a story of a toxic relationship. The singer suggests that he is living with both an angel and devil. Through the lyrics, he implies that the angel and devil he's living with are the same person. The phrase, “When I say I'm living with an angel that's you, When I say I'm living with the devil, You know who I mean” suggests this interpretation. It could be that he views his partner as an angel on the one hand, but on the other, in their darker times, he sees them as a devil. This could be due to their toxic dynamics or unhealthy behaviors. The chorus of the song suggests that the singer wants the relationship to end, but he is going to hurt the person he is living with in the process. The repeated phrase “And I'm gonna burn you out, And I'm gonna burn you down” gives the listener a sense of the singer's desire to end the relationship and take the other person with him.
In the second verse, the singer seems to come to a realization that he needs to end the relationship, and he asks the other person to save themselves. He sings, “Cast me away today, Save yourself, Cast me away today, Save yourself, Anyway you can.” These lyrics suggest that the singer has come to the realization that their relationship is toxic, and he wants the other person to cast him away before he causes them any more harm.
Overall, the lyrics of the song “Cast Me Away” seem to depict a person struggling with a toxic relationship. The ultimate message of the song could be interpreted as a call to self-preservation and the importance of ending unhealthy relationships before they cause too much harm.
