Review and be familiar with the area you’re going.

Bring a map, compass, gps, or all three and know how to use them.

Know that the instant you realize your lost stop, collect yourself, and get your bearings by going over what you do know. There is a road to south, a river to the east ex.. and come up with a plan. Don’t just keep walking telling yourself it’s just a little farther I know it.

Let me summarize this for you.
She got lost (took a wrong turn), but was an outdoors type- so she was able to keep herself, and dog, alive. She got cold but slept with her dog and had clothes that covered her, needed to eat more but sustained off the land, and stayed positive. Found 7 day's later by rangers.
End of story.

I live in Oregon and I had told my 9 year old daughter that the moment you realize you are lost, sit down by a tree and wait for help. Search teams will stop looking for you after five days. Well, she was at Diamond Lake, wandered from a trail and realized she was lost. Sat down by a tree and started crying. She was found an hour later. Did I mention she was 9 years old?

The very best thing you can do to avoid getting into this sort of trouble is to tell a friend where you are going, your planned route, and when you expect to be back.
This way a rescue can be started as soon as you are overdue. AND it will make finding you a snap.
I did this once and the hike took me longer than I expected it would. My friends called the rangers and I met the man who had been sent to find me. I was only about a mile and a half from the end of the trail and I was fine. But had I not been, the guy would have found me pretty quickly.

Best thing is to invest in a compass and learn to use it, get a map of the area your going into, pack provisions and space blanket and a small tarp. Oh yeah and they make these things called GPS that can send out your location better than death.

The best way to avoid this sort of trouble is to stay away from areas that you are not familiar with. I spent 32 years in Northern British Columbia and was never lost. But I get lost every time I visit a big city. I try to avoid cities but that is not always possible.

Nature really isn't a lonely place. I used to spend whole days by myself in the woods listening to the birds and the wind through the leaves in the trees. The rabbits would play around me & the deer would stand not far off munching on the tall grass & leaves. It is one of the few places that my depression doesn't make me feel alone. It's very healing if you can make yourself go during a bad bout of depression. It always helps me get back up. 😊 (p.s. I have video of the rabbits playing around me ❤)

What an awesome and incredible story! I believe that she did see angels and her grandmother too. How else can you explain not just her survival, but her entire attitude about the entire experience and being able to enjoy the beauty of her environment and the entire journey? Such a spiritual experience will undoubtedly change her future outlook on life. Beautiful and amazing story.

usernamemykel Yes, as a matter of fact, I have. I would also like to think that I can differentiate between the two. If it was an hallucinations, it would have involved things that would not make sense, and the visions usually involve negative things that feed on the person's fears and it would have made her more agitated vs feeling a sense of peace. This is difficult to explain to someone that does not have a spiritual belief system, and/or has no knowledge or history of working in the mental health field. Not everyone believes, so to those that do not have a spiritual belief system, I can understand where you might think that she had hallucinations. To those that do have such a belief system, they can see the true beauty of her experience. Hallucinations are usually based on fears that for whatever reason, either the person has a mental health condition, or the person has issues, trauma, etc..., that have not yet been addressed and worked through. But I definitely understand your point and factored in these things prior to making my comment, as I have a tendency to be quite analytical.

JK Rai But how is this not a valid question? I clearly state which type of professionals Cayden is referring to. I wasn't the first to wonder what he was referring to because of the use of quotations. People are too blinded by "common sense". Those people who say, or think that, are the ones who aren't educated and can't see past basic everyday information. (So they think they are smart, but aren't). They don't know or have clarification or critical thinking skills. Cayden put "Professionals" in quotations. As if saying the professionals aren't really as professional as they claim. For example, (an outdoorsmen who doesn't know his limits although hes been a tracker for 30 years and still got himself lost). A doctor is a professional regardless of whether he knows how to live in the woods. I was asking Cayden if he meant professionals like a doctor who think they are so smart that they can survive in the forest with no experience (which is stupid), or if he meant "professionals" as in professional outdoorsmen who have years of experience but still get lost because they are too cocky or over-confident about their knowledge of the outdoors. My question was simple. Is Cayden referring to professional city folks or professional outdoorsmen? Theres a big difference between both. City folks getting lost is common because they aren't experienced. Outdoorsmen getting lost is not common and if it happens I'm wondering where they went wrong. I was wondering if professional outdoorsmen with years of experience still get lost. Apparently he just meant city folks. But why put them in quotations? Quotations change the meaning of a word or sentence and did not apply in this case. Had they not been misused, it would have been clear what Cayden meant.

Always carry a whistle to help scare away large animals and help people to hear you. Even if you don't hunt, carry a pistol and plenty of ammunition, if lost, shoot into the air three times. That's the hunter's signal that someone's lost. The sound will carry very far and people will come to find you. As I said before a whistle will help the searchers to find you too. And keep wildlife away. A locator beacon is also a very big help.

What i find funny- if you are hit by a car or some other serious injury that requires a "bay flight" helicopter rescue lift to a hospital, they def send the bill. And its usually far beyond 10s of thousands. Generally 100s of thousands. For usually a few min in a helicopter from something beyond your control.
....so why not send her the bill.
No, it wasnt her fault. But it is her responsibility. The buck shouldn't be passed.

Glad she made it out safely. Great material for a book or movie. Hard to understand how she got so lost so fast. A train goes through the mountains not far from there and it can be heard miles away. Just walking North would put her on the highway 2. Several years ago a plane crashed in those mountains all were thought to be dead until they walked out to the highway 2. I just hope she does not get lost again.

Remember, if you ever find yourself lost, keep hiking, only faster. You'll eventually find the trail sooner or later. Also remember, your family will have a very nice memorial service for you and give all your stuff away. That will keep you warm at night.

Her keeping calm and a peaceful attitude not only kept he r fro m panicking, but apparently she sent out "messages" to the animals and nature around her, that she was a peaceful, even happy, to be part of the whole cosmos. That she and her beloved doggie survived is really wonderful. It does teach us, though, to stick to the trails. These are vast areas, and one single turnaround can steer us into disaster. No matter how experienced, without ample supplies and a route to stick to, plus a compass, you put yourself in danger. I don't know how cellphone reception is out there, but you need some kind of way to communicate with others. At outset, leave a plan of your hike and time you intend to spend and do not swerve away from the trao;s, that is why they're marked. But some just want to be free to go where they wish, only it can lead even experienced, strong people into a disastrous situations. I'm glad they both are home safely (and the rescuers didn't let her hike back), STAY SAFE, FOLKS, we'd like you back happy and healthy!

My Dad taught me to turn around when walking, the view is different and can disorient you.
I look for landmarks that stand out for me. I keep in mind where the sun is. Pay attention to the path, and your surroundings. Take note of hills, mountains, water etc.
Getting lost in the forest is scary.
Stay put, so people can find you.
When you don't know where you are, and start panicking you'll lose a lot of energy.

I got lost in the woods once. I was with this guy I was "seeing" at the time. We wanted to get away from the party on our camping trip, so we walked into the woods together. We were jumping around on trees and goofing around and before I knew it I didn't know where we were anymore. Trees surrounded us and we couldn't even hear the music from the party anymore. We argued a bit over which way to go. He had more survival skills than I, and was trained for it. So we ended up picking his direction... luckily we did make it back. The idea of being stuck out there with this boy I liked kind of excited me. No feeling like being lost in the woods.

The thing that annoys me the most is how she keeps getting lost (multiple times and just keeps going aimlessly at a certain point with no clear destination) after she knows she was lost. Had she gave her girl pride a rest and returned to where she initially lost the trail, she would have been found hella quicker. She didn't want to admit she was lost.

How did she "cross a raging river" with her dog (who appears to be a puppy)? In any event, we're glad she was okay, but she should be billed for the cost of the search, and for being negligent in her actions. It appears the ONE thing she did right was not to panic (although we wonder about her mental ability). You should ALWAYS let someone know EXACTLY, your plans when entering the wilderness. To not do that is very remiss, and, like this case, cause a lot of people unthinkable concern and cost in search efforts. Let someone know WHERE you are going, WHEN you will return, WHAT provisions you have (including bear spray, if they're in the area), WHO to contact and who you are with if you are not alone (including your dog), and WHY -- what your intentions were and anything else important, including if you have provisions with you, etc. Most of all, if you are not totally familiar with the area, don't attempt it! (And DON'T expose a pet to that kind of duress.) Lastly, was this woman mentally competent? We wonder, since it seems she did NOTHING correct about survival -- she obviously had luck on her side, that's about all!.

I used to live at high elevation in the slightly developed areas around mountainous wilderness near Lake Tahoe in the Sierras. It was not uncommon to have 4 or 5 deaths each winter of people, usually from "Back East", but not always, to get lost on their cross country skis before or during snow storms. Often while skiing "downhill" on developed slopes, they would turn the wrong way and find themselves going down to riverbeds in "desolation wilderness", or far enough away that no one could hear them yelling for help. Snowstorms can reduce visibility to about 50 feet, and when the sun goes down in deep snowy areas, everything looks the same. Sometimes the men would freeze to death and the women would survive due to higher natural insulation from body fat. Sometimes, they wouldn't find the bodies until the spring thaw. Once some guy thought he was 12 miles north from his actual location and put his private airplane down in the lake in the snowy weather, killing himself, wife and adolescent child. There are always search and rescue operations going; some successful; some not. The "outside" is wilder than you might think, and the woods don't care what you have a degree in, when you're lost, you're lost, even if you're a Sasquatch decendant, or you're a Mixed Martial Arts champion. I'm just sayin' .....

I was expecting a "terrifying ordeal" and that is not what happened. I am very very happy that she was found, don't get me wrong. These things don't always turn out this good. I am very happy that she is well and home, but terrified maybe and over statement. Pay attention when you are out in the wilderness, and mark a trail if you are unfamiliar with your surroundings. Buy a personal locator and carry it on you at all times.

Maybe not staying put got her found. I've heard of tons of people found dead where they stayed put one lady was found dead not far from the trail so if lost its just chance, my advice if you can start a forest fire it's not going unmissed

As a city boy, I got lost in the woods, and if ur from the city ,the woods at night are spooky as heck, I’d of felt a lot better with a dog, so relieved when the crack of dawn came, then I was able to sleep for an hour or so, found the trail that day, couldnt believe how far I wandered, asked some young boys on dirt bikes on how to get back. They looked and said wow that’s quite a ways, gave me a ride , I was covered in mosquito bites ,finally got to my car

Many years ago, I got lost in Washington State, up in the Cascades, about 30 miles from the Canadian boarder. It happened so fast, I lost the trail. It was NOT a good feeling. Fortunately I spotted a old fire lookout tower and made my way to it. I spent the night there and then followed a trail out. I got back before anyone knew I was missing. So glad to know that Madeline's story ended well!

Stop doing that. Here, let me do it.

To those of you who think staying in place and waiting is the best thing to do. Food for thought. Once you realize you are lost mark the ground with your feet and place a marker, anything you have with you to tie on a branch or just brush the leaves aside on the ground and use sticks or rocks into arrow shape but know that rain could wash this out. Then make a new marker when you can still see the previous marker at the new marker location. Go one way for some distance then follow the markers back to the start and do the same another way. If you keep doing this increasing the distance you will soon enough find the trail again and in the repeating of it all become super familiar with the area and the entire area will have markers all over the place that a searcher would see and know you around and follower the arrowed markers back to your spot where you first realized you were lost and you can leave a message indicating which marked trial you are out on currently if not there at the time. The point is to never lose the location of the spot where you first realize you are lost. When SAR tries to find you they log where they have searched for you and where they haven't and have a headquarters. You must log where you have searched for the trail and where you haven't and your headquarters is where you first realized you were lost. Hell, put something visible up in the air at the lost point or in a clearing closest to you so the chopper can see it. You can not lose the point of where you first realized you are lost because this is a reference point and you know your trail is out there in a radius from that point. This is just my instinct but I do think it should be taught since staying in place can end up killing you and is not practical since you could be in a dense forest where the choppers can't see you or you will get hungry and thirsty sooner or later and go forage and probably lose where you were staying in place. A ball of twine can go a long way like it did in the Labyrinth of the Minotaur.

When you realize you are lost you will panic. The most important thing to do is stop moving and think. Mark your current location at eye height (or higher). Choose a direction in which you think you will find the trail. Find a landmark in that direction and walk to that landmark. If you did not find the trail, go back to the place you realized you were lost. Choose a new landmark 45 degrees from the last direction you took and walk to it. Continue this approach until you find your trail. If you don’t find the trail, repeat the process around 360 degrees and extend distances. Three blasts of a whistle is a call for help. If you are hiking alone in the wilderness, carry ten essentials and consider a personal locator beacon.

Sounds like she had a native-type vision quest, Nice to hear a good ending. When I was somewhat inexperienced I almost went wrong way or got lost a few min. a few times just as easy lol. Once you lose a sense of direction which can happen quickly it can get serious real quick. Carry maps, gps & don't randomly walk in directions. Get viewpoints, pick an educated direction or in her case stay put. has everything to do with route finding, navigation skills & preperation which all improves w experience. I've always loved the woods but when I first started really hiking I learned pretty quick I wasn't the best route finder, so I kept that in mind. looks simple enough, follow the trail but just takes that one spot one time. It's like anything new it seems so foriegn at first but now their's almost no way i'll get lost for more than an hour.

Not necessarily, some people get disoriented easily and may have a hard time knowing where they are when using a map of a forest. If they think they are in the wrong place they may get more lost. It’s why everyone who do this shit, by themselves especially, should have a Satellite phone/GPSx

No experienced hiker would hit ANY trail without the essentials for survival - a knife, a firestarter, a means for emergency shelter, water plus a container in which water could be boiled, a signaling device, cordage, compass (and the knowledge to use it properly) . She was NOT an experienced hiker, she was apparently just a walker. When she left the trail to bathe, she should have left an eye-height visible marker on the trail so that she could easily return to it. She ended up losing sight of the trail, went WAY TOO FAR trying to find it, using up her energy, and causing the SAR team to have to fan out over a much wider area. When she realized that she was "lost" , she should have stayed in place under whatever shelter she could find/fabricate. Everyone must know their limitations - she way exceeded hers and caused grief to many for seven days. I don't feel sorry for her. Hopefully she's learned a lesson and will READ about how to survive in the wilderness if "lost" or if injured.

First of all, Sarah, you have no idea what you are talking about as far as "... 20 pounds of survival gear". It sounds more like you're thinking of camping gear. I can hold ALL of my survival gear in one hand.
Secondly, the article said that she is an experienced hiker. No, an experienced hiker would not enter an unknown trail without having the survival gear, and the hiker would have left word with someone as to where he's going and when to be expected back.
Thirdly, she doesn't appear to have been through a 7 day lost-in-the-woods ordeal - she looks like she might have stepped out of a library.
Fourthly, I believe that she did indeed have the equipment needed for a 7 day stay, and staged the hiker-lost-in-the-woods to garner attention.
So, either she's an inexperienced, ignorant of survival techniques walker (not hiker), or she played the media for what it was worth.

Here are the basics - can fit in one hand - knife, firestarter, tinder,

I had a similar experience, but it would untrue that 'it just happened' and I made no mistakes. The redeeming aspect of it is, what did I learn? Plenty, and it will probably never happen again. Generally, I feel we only get one chance at such a thing. Having this happen is far easier than one can imagine. Some don't get a 2nd chance... This was a cool story but super click bait title.
She did an amazing job keeping her cool even though she was completely and utterly lost. Turned it into a whole spiritual experience and managed to come out of it with little to no damage to herself or her dog. Overall, a pretty amazing story.

we grew up doing lots of hiking in national parks & trails but my parents always insisted we always go with a friend or sibling even for "im just going a short distance" cause you never know. then our parents bought us all gps trackers. & now i just bought everyone personal locator beacons. not to mention the old whistle i carry for luck because its the first thing my dad gave me on my first hike. now im totally matrix. (& i never leave home w/o my ruger lc9.)

Never go hiking without a MAP and compass. Trees are especially disorientating but so are hills and valleys. Fog or mist will get you lost in no time even in familiar locations. Best advice is to get as HIGH as possible so you can see the entire landscape and searchers can see you!

The part where it said she became more in touch with her spiritual side I felt that oh and if you go into the woods alone by yourself and you walk off the trails make sure you bring duct tape for the trees so you can make your own trail and make sure no one can find you and always be aware of your surroundings there are more entities and creatures out there than just ordinary animals just saying

Thank you, as soon as I hear this guy’s voice I click away because I know he’s about to tell a long tale with 90% of the info completely unrelated or just repeated over and over. What’s wrong with the people who make these videos? The comments are always filled with the same complaints I just made, and that they took fifteen minutes to tell a three minute story. But I get tricked because either other people are putting their videos on their channel or these people have many differently named channels that all have the same videos. I always go straight to the comments to find out what actually happened in the video, and it usually turns out that the title was just clickbait.

She goes on a hike with inadequate provisions, takes a wrong turn, gets lost and wanders all over the woods. Missing 411 stories are loaded with this type of problem, experienced hikers disappear. She should have had a personal locator beacon or some device to alert rescuers where she was, just putting it out there.
