The group was formed in 1988 by singer, songwriter, and keyboard player Jascha Richter (b. 1963) alongside drummer Kare Wanscher (b. 1969), guitarist and producer Mikkel Lentz (b. 1968), and Soren Madsen (b. 1967) in Aarhus, Denmark. The group now consists of three members, with the rest parting ways with Madsen. The group started as a little cafe band, but they soon won the annual talent contest in Aarhus in July 1988. MLTR signed with one of the judges, JP Andersen, as their new manager, and the group got a recording deal with Medley Records, who later became a part of EMI.
MLTR's eponymous first album hit the top 5 of the album charts in both Denmark and Norway, selling tens of thousands of copies over and over again. Since that international debut in September 1991, with 'Michael Learns To Rock' being a sensation, the group has sold more than 12 million legal albums, and it has been performing ever since. Their song catalog continues to be very popular as well, with many singles sold online. Since 'Michael Learns To Rock' came out, they have released 'Colours' (1993), 'Played on Pepper' (1995), 'Nothing to Lose' (1997), 'Michael Learns to Rock - Greatest Hits' (1999), 'Blue Night' (2000), 'Take Me to Your Heart' / 'Michael Learns to Rock' (2004), 'The Best Of Michael Learns To Rock – Live' (2007), and 'Eternity' (2008).
MLTR is one of the most popular bands in their homeland. Thanks to social media such as YouTube and Facebook, MLTR's fan-base continues to grow worldwide. They're unusual for a European group in that they have strong popularity both in Asia (particularly China and India) as well as several Anglo-American nations.

I Do
Michael Learns to Rock Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
For as long as we both shall live
I'm left with an echo of "I do"
It doesn't seam so far away
I remember the promise we made
Still hear an echo of "I do"
Cause you will always be a part of me
I keep you in my heart
And a piece of me will always be
Right there by your side
Now that you've found somebody new
And Gods knows I'm happy for you
Don't you hear an echo of "I do"?
I've tried to erase you from my mind
It keeps me awake at night
Hunted by echoes of "I do"
Cause you will always be a part of me
I keep you in my heart
And a piece of me will always be
Right there by your side
Release:
Who do you turn to when your sad
Who can replace the love we had
How do you make it through the night
When I am no longer by your side
If you ever need me I'll be there
Chorus:
Cause you will always be a part of me
I keep you in my heart
And a piece of me will always be
Right there by your side
Michael Learns to Rock’s “I Do” is a song about remembering the promises made in a past relationship and the emotions that come with realizing that those promises are no longer being kept. The song starts by explicitly stating the wedding vow that the singer, presumably of the male gender, made to his partner. However, he is now left with only memories of that promise and the affirmation that he still hears the echo of “I do”.
As the chorus starts, it becomes clear that the singer has lost his partner to somebody else. Nonetheless, he still holds onto his feelings for her and sets his intentions to always keeping her in his heart regardless of her relationship status. The verses then continue with him trying to erase her from his mind, but he is haunted by his promise to her. The release is probably the most telling part of the song, as the singer insinuates that he will always be there for her even if she is with somebody else. The chorus repeats, rounding up the song’s theme of eternal love regardless of the partner’s current relationship status.
One of the underlying themes in the song is the concept of “unfinished business”. The singer and his partner were tied together by a legal commitment, and no matter what comes after the end of the commitment, the memories of the promises made will still linger on. The song also touches on the theme of moving on, as the singer acknowledges that his partner has found somebody new and that he is happy for her, but he still holds onto his memories of their past relationship. Finally, the release offers a message of friendship, as the singer offers his help and support to his ex-partner regardless of the circumstances.
