An E7 with some 25 years in, yes a low rank for that long, but a Medal of Honor recipient, yet the Major treats him like he’s insignificant and he’s an academy grad with 11 years in and newly promoted. They should have had a military advisor for this movie. A Major in his mid-30’s would never treat a 50 year old hardened, seasoned war vet with a Medal of Honor like he was blank on his boots!

Highway is what we used to call in the Army a "Super 7." An old crusty E-7 that is completely content to retire at E-7, not concerned at all about getting promoted again, and therefore talks to whoever he wants to however he wants to. My first platoon sergeant was a Super 7. This was 2005 and he had jumped into Panama with the 82nd. This guy would just flat out tell the company commander and 1SG that our platoon wouldn't do something if he thought it was stupid....in front of the whole company at formation. If I saw that guy today I would kiss him. The old school military is over.😥😥

I was Air Force and today’s NCOs are too passive, politically correct and accommodating! Lord, we have a social worker that comes by here every once in a while to check on the mental health of the Airmen.

@gamehengeful In Canada that would be the Warrant Officer rank, the two ranks above Master Sergeant (an E7). The armed forces runs on its master warrant officers, and they can pretty much say and do whatever they want. In my experience the Sergeants and WO mess on base is the best place to get a cup of coffee as well.

This movie reminds me of my dad who was a Gunnery Sargent in the USMC. He fought (survived) in the Korean War (5th Marine Division), 2 Purple Hearts, lost many guys in his platoon, killed countless Chinese and North Koreans, Returned home with severe PTSD, Went through years of counseling to ease his pain. He passed away two years ago at the age of 89. Greatest father any son could have. Semper Fi!

@@wytche3546 It was kill or be killed. Years later, my dad opened up about the war where they desperately fought a retreating defense after the Chinese attack across the Yalu River. It was a bloody massacre on both sides. His best buddy was killed by a mortar round. He was hit by the same mortar but survived with shrapnels in his back. After his buddy was killed, he went berserk and went on rampage like Tristan in The Legend of the Falls movie after his younger brother was killed. He was so full of rage and fury that he didn't care if he was killed. That's the first and last time I saw him cry.

@@METALITHrevetments It's a silver star on the Vietnam Service Medal, which is 5 campaigns. One award is the ribbon with one bronze star. That's the way campaign medals work. Example, my Southwest Asia Service Medal has 3 bronze stars. That means for Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and the drawdown.

It always stuns me when ineffectual people get into positions of power, and their bruised egos make them treat people the way they do. The guy has a tough assignment to give to the most seasoned guy around, and he goes out of his way to demotivate those he gives the task to. In business, I have seen tons of these guys. Talk about a relic, the guy should look into a mirror. A good leader motivates the people he leads, and if that makes them even better than he is, then he has totally succeeded. But dorks like this guy and their egos cannot handle that. All their failures are blamed on other people, and all the successes of others they try to take credit for.

My dad was in WW2, five campaigns. As far as I could see or hear, he never showed any signs of psychological wear and tear. He loved this country though. From our childhhood his favorite comment when he saw us digging life was "America's a good country isn't it?" I loved him dearly.

When I was in the Army our Captain called 'At Ease' for the Sergeant Major.

Now for those of who are civilians and are unfamiliar with military protocol, this is not standard procedure. A captain is an officer and sergeants are non-comissioned officers (NCOs). Officers automatically outrank NCOS. Since the captain was already in the room there was no need to call at ease for the Sergeant Major.

However, he did it out of respect and admiration. This captain was only about 10-12 years in. This Sergeant Major (E-9, highest rank of NCOs) was a 30+ year man. He commanded respect where ever he went even by officers.

TBH it is kind of hard to imagine a Marine officer would be willing to treat hardened combat veterans that way, especially Medal of Honor winners. The Major would have been well served to talk about this unruly platoon and wants them whipped into shape, but enlist Highway to make sure that it gets done. Most officers would be ecstatic to get someone with Highway's experience and expertise to finetune their unit into fighting shape and pass inspections, especially since that Major would want a great review by his superiors during his time in command to get to higher rank. Good NCOs are an asset, and someone like Highway would be a godsend even to rank motivated officers since it makes their job so much easier. Majors with bad unit reviews dont tend to make Colonel as the jump from Major to Lt. Colonel and then to Colonel is actually some of the hardest hurdles to overcome if your goal is to get to a 4 star general ranking. This is when it becomes REALLY competitive when it comes to weeding out the officers that won't make it to higher rank and awarding command slots.

A man who guides and facillitates whatever is required by his NCO's to keep his grunts and pogs in a state of readyness. The Col. In the movie is a great example of your description. Testing the oppinion of his non-coms against that of mid and low level command to see how unified the command structure is. I think however that becouse of the intense competition for promotion the Majors will focus on what will get them the promotion the quickest. Not what is best for the unit as a whole. I got a great quote from a Marine about two years ago that goes something like this.

" Whomever a Sargeant would be willing to hit in the face in gross violation of millitairy protocol is the One you need to keep a eye on"

@Thijs Hagenbeek oh I agree. Ive had several family members, both enlisted and officer who have talked about their experiences (army primarily, not marines). So I do have a viewpoint from both perspectives. Good officers listen to their NCOs even long after they are past their junior officer days. Bad officers are like Major Powers here. Arrogant and full of themselves.

I was in the military and I once inquired to a newly commissioned ensign on his first posting if his status as an officer means he outranks a chief petty officer. The young man told me that although he technically is superior in rank to the chief, what really matters in the pecking order is experience and length of service. He said that the opinion of a chief petty officer with twenty years of experience will be taken far above a wet behind the ears ensign fresh out of the academy. The chief has probably been in the service as long as the ensign has been alive. A junior officer cannot be taken more seriously than a senior enlisted man. In fact, the enlisted ranks of E-7 and above confer de facto officer status upon those service members, in my opinion.

We (Navy, RAN) had our fair share of "Major Powers" look alikes. Worst one was a muscle head who had "roid rage" before it was a thing. He used to stand over you in his cabin, shirt off, and scream at you. I was very junior then, so swap posted to get away from him. 2 months later, he knocked out the a/c tech, because "his cabin was hot." So he quietly left the Navy. Later, as a senior chief, (E8) and then as a Warrant Officer (E9 in my Navy) I had the occasional wally, but seeing (on most ships) I had been in as long as/longer than the skipper, they left you alone. Most WEEOs (section head, major equipment) were actually pretty good. But the occasional idiots.

"This is The New Marine Corps, a New Breed" and yet, to reference another movie, i think that most of the "You Can't Handle the Truth!" speech from A Few Good Men, likewise applies; deep down, in socially unpolite places, we need rust-and-blood old wardogs like Highway, regardless of the era, peacetime or wartime, because that is explicitly the exact purpose of what the american military is built on, and to constantly re-reform the corps, or the army, or the navy, out of and away from those designs and formats, is stepping the organization into compromise, non-functionality, and perhaps ultimately, disbandment, which puts the nation and its polite society, into very dangerous and vulnerable circumstances.

The Comments are funny. The movie is set 40 years ago and released in 1986.
The Major's "attitude" is part of the Theme and he is Highway's antagonist.
PS: Highway won the Army MOH in Korea, left the Army and later enlisted in the Marines which explained the 30+ year span of Highway's Service.

As a air force veteran that was stationed with marines I know first hand this major would have been scrapped under boot for treating a gunny with a Medal of Honor like this. Probably would have been busted back to captain. And no way a marine with 25yrs and this level of combat is a damn E-7.

An E7 with 25 years in was possible years ago with 26 years at mandatory retirement. He wasn’t a kiss ass or politician in any way and got busted back. E7 is the best rank for any branch if you did hands on work and didn’t do what I mentioned. Plus he and Choozoo served in the Army beforehand. Puts him at close to 30 years for total military service.

He had to have more years in than that. It said he was in Korea and his ribbon bar bears that out. So, even if he got in Korea early '53 (last 1/2 year), he'd have to have been in 29-30 yrs because this movie leads up to Grenada (10/83). But even if Highway went in at 18, he'd still be just shy of 50...or 49.

I remember my Msgyst knew a Gunny like that, and was treated like he was insignificant. The reason was because he always put the chain of command in jeopardy with the local media, because his subordinates would rat him out to the public, for unethical actions, like what Gysgt Highway does. 😢😢😢

This was such an enjoyable film, but totally unrealistic! He’s about 50 years old and an E7 in the Marine Corps that’s close to mandatory retirement probably close to 26 years. A low rank for someone in that long considering his excellent record including the Medal of Honor. And a newly promoted Major with nothing but book knowledge and a sinister appearance berates him for his old school ways and past disciplinary actions.

You missed the part in the movie where he got busted down in rank, multiple times, for his drunk/disorderly and smacking an officer. They went easy on him due to his earning the MOH.

@Snake Plissken True. Had he not been a good soldier, he would have been out probably by that point. And he might have been a 30 year veteran since he was in the military since at least 65 and nearly old enough to be in Korea.

@Ethan Weeter He was a Marine, not a soldier. Army has soldiers. He had already been in 30 years. The movie takes place during the US invasion of Grenada (1983), and Highway was in the Korean War (1950-1953). He (and the SGM) were in the Army during the Korean War and joined the USMC soon after.

I like Gunny Highway's wording on the situation, when he tells the Colonel:"Marines shouldn't have to be sitting on their sorry -----, Waiting for equipment that they should already have"!
Even the Colonel agrees with him!

Ummm, in which Marine platoon do soldiers act like sissified spoiled children, talk back to and assault their superiors? I love Eastwood's performance, but the silliness that this in any way represents the U.S. Marine Corp. is beyond my ability to suspend my disbelief. And as a Medal of Honor recipient, I do believe Major Powers owes Eastwood a salute.

I know what you mean. I was Air Force and as an E6 served in Afghanistan for a whole year. My boss was a snot-nosed 1Lt in the Army. When I came back from R and R at Bagram, he was having a friendly conversation with another Air Force Lt about what to expect where he’s going to, but sneered to me everything going on where I’m at and how horrible a performance report I wrote on a subordinate under me was. Any time I tried to have a conversation with him, he just shut me down.

I just noticed that, before they left the Major's Office, that these two didn't salute the Major.
Neither would I. This "Major" came over from Supply and Logistics.
With what we see, later in this movie, he should've stayed there! He was easily the worst choice for a Commanding Officer that I've ever seen! He's rude, insensitive, and a pure nitwit that knows nothing about leading Troops into battle, and winning said battles!
He's also a sore loser. Evidence of this fact is found at the scene where 1st Platoon loses a fight, fought in water, to the Troops that Funny Highway is leading. Corporal "Stitch" Jones, being dragged to shore, "Improvises" a Victory for himself, and for Gunny Highway's Platoon! The results, although the Victory comes as the result of a couple of "Low Blows" to his would-be "Captors", ensures some much-needed R and R for Gunny's Troops!
Major Malcolm Powers always thought only of himself...and paid the price for it, near the end of the movie,when the Colonel demoted and dismisses him and his cronies!

I find it odd that someone could rise in the ranks as an officer in the United States Marine Corps, and have little to no respect for Staff NCO's with extensive combat experience. Even if they came from supply and logistics.

I knew a stupid officers like him when I was in the Army.

He's too damn ignorant to experience looking him in face and it could save his miserable life some day. The main trouble with Academy officers is they think enlisted personnel are supposed to be like they are. I can still recall the one young lieutenant in Germany who was put into a wallocker which was then promptly shoved out of a window of an upper barracks floor because of his attitude and thinking. The outcome for the LT was not pretty.

So the major is the ops officer but he sure acts like the commander. Where is the Bn commander? Why is the major spending all his time seemingly commanding one platoon? Where is that platoon leader? Why is the most elite unit in the unit treated like garbage? Lastly, no active duty military member would treat a MoH recipient like that. But I still liked the movie 😂
