All You're Missin' Is A Heartache
Michael W. Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's over the line, a shadow of doubt
From outside looking at the "In Crowd"
(Tempting voices are calling you)
They look mighty fine, a sight to behold
But all that glitters is not gold
(Still those voices are calling you)

[Chorus]
All you're missin' is a heartache
A disillusion for a keepsake
A life of living with your own mistake
All you're missin' is a heartache

The water is high, you're out on a limb
Well, if you take the fall then it's "sink or swim"
(Clouds of reason will follow you)
You're kissing the dark
You're courting your pride
You wonder is it greener on the other side
(But they have nothing to offer you)

[Chorus]

All you're missin', missin' is a heartache
All you're missin', missin' is a heartache
Whoa whoa whoa whoa

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The song "All You're Missin' Is A Heartache" by Michael W. Smith is a cautionary tale about the dangers of succumbing to temptation and peer pressure. The opening lines suggest that the singer is faced with a decision that may be morally ambiguous. The "in-crowd" may seem appealing, with their lavish lifestyles and tempting voices, but they are not necessarily to be trusted. The chorus warns the singer that "all you're missin' is a heartache," suggesting that going down this path will lead to disillusionment and regret.

The verse that follows paints a picture of a person caught between competing forces. The water is high, and the singer is out on a limb. If they take the fall, it's sink or swim. The clouds of reason are following them, but they are caught up in the allure of the dark side. They are courting their pride, wondering if the grass is greener on the other side. But the chorus repeats the refrain, reminding the singer that all they're missing is a heartache.

This song is a timeless reminder that the world can be a treacherous place, and that succumbing to temptation and peer pressure can be dangerous. It is a plea for individuals to stand up for what they believe in, to put faith in their own reason and their own values, and to resist the temptation to do what is easy or popular. The song may be simple, but its message is clear: all you're missing is a heartache, so don't give in to temptation.

One of my favorite albums by Mike!

Olaoluwa Afolayan

He was my favorite artist when I was younger as well. Personally, I was more partial to Go West Young Man since I pretty much grew up with that album but this one is also very good!

some of the songs from this album were used in a youth musical. It was called the Big Picture. It was a very good one. My youth group did it back in the early 90's.

CMWaller92

Yes, he's still singing. Doing quite a bit of worship music these days, but released a studio album a couple years ago. His last album was an instrumental one. Styles change, but I think everything he puts out is great.

Cat Smith

it was my favorite CD when I was around 11, 12. Used to love him more than any other singer out there. Very talented, with very beautiful songs
