Almost There
Michael W. Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mary, full of innocence
Carrying the Holy prince
You're almost there, you're almost there
Mother of the Living Word
Trusting in the voice you heard
You're almost there, you're almost there

You're almost where the angels see
Redemption's plan unfolding
All hope is in the Son you'll bear
You're almost there

A lonely road, a willing heart
Pray for strength to do your part
You're almost there, you're almost there
Trust the Father to provide
Bread of heaven prophesied
You're almost there, you're almost there

You're almost where the waiting ends
Delivering the life within
The answered prayer, Emmanuel
You're almost there

You're almost where the journey ends
Where death will die and life begins
The answered prayer, Emmanuel
You're almost, almost there

You're almost where the waiting ends
Delivering the life within
The answered prayer, Emmanuel
You're almost there

You're almost where the journey ends
Where death will die and life begins

The answered prayer, Emmanuel
You're almost there

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "Almost There" by Michael W. Smith and Amy Grant revolve around the Virgin Mary and her journey towards eventually giving birth to Jesus Christ. The song is an ode to her perseverance and faith, as she makes her way towards the realization of God's plan for her. Mary is described as someone who is "full of innocence" and "trusting in the voice [she] heard". She is also acknowledged for the fact that she is "almost where the angels see / Redemption's plan unfolding". Mary's journey is framed as one of hope and anticipation, with the song emphasizing that she is "almost there" and that all her efforts will soon be rewarded.

The song presents Mary's journey as a lonely one, but also one that is marked by her willingness to do her part. She is depicted as praying for strength, but also trusting in God to provide for her in every way. The song mentions the "bread of heaven prophesied", which is a reference to the belief that Jesus was the fulfillment of a prophecy in the Old Testament that promised that God would provide his people with bread from heaven. The repeated refrain of "you're almost there" is a reminder to Mary that she is on the verge of something momentous, and that all her struggles and hardships will soon be behind her.

Death will die...Those lines are for me. For upwards of 3 years now, I have had visions of my death - my passage and the life after. I wake up often confused but content that my salvation is assured in God through the risen Christ. This song therefore resonates with my experience, my reality and the near daily warnings I get about my soon passage. I keep my prayers same - May I be called, while working for you my Lord, for only then will my death die. Then, I live, never to die again.

This modern Christmas carol sounds like it’s one step closer to heaven.

The composition, the arrangement, instrumentation, and of course the vocals are tremendous, and stand on their own. But what motivates me to write this today are the visuals. They are superb! Understated, gentle, and work so well with the song and its themes, enhancing what's already there in the song and performance and never getting in the way. I've never seen anything like it. At the song's climax the visuals grow brighter without distracting. I wonder who is responsible for this great work. Anybody know?
