Je Suis Un Homme
Michel Polnareff Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

La société ayant renoncé
À me transformer
À me déguiser

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Michel Polnareff's song Je Suis Un Homme depict a man who is comfortable in his own skin despite societal pressure to conform to certain gender roles. He sings about how society has stopped trying to transform him and dress him up to look like everyone else, and even though people on the street call him a "pédé" (a derogatory term for a gay man), the women who believe that about him only need to try him out to realize that he is indeed a man. He confidently proclaims that he is a man in every sense of the word, and that his style in bed matches his legal identity as a man.

During his trial, he calls upon the testimony of all the women in his town who know him well and can testify to his masculinity. He boldly declares that he doesn't need a referendum or expert to confirm that he is a man and that there is an even number of sexual partners he has had. He looks forward to the day when society will be more accepting of nudity in public spaces and eagerly anticipates the opportunity to perform naked on stage and dazzle Paris with his anatomy.

Overall, the song is a celebration of individuality and self-acceptance, and an indictment of the restrictive expectations society places on people based on their gender identity.
