He was born in Paris, the son of Fernand Sardou and Jackie Rollin (Jackie Sardou). Contrary to what has been written at the beginning of his career, he is not the grandson of the dramatist Victorien Sardou.
He is known for songs dealing with various social and political issues, such as the rights of women in Islamic countries, clerical celibacy and colonialism. Another sometimes controversial theme found in some of his songs ("Les Ricains," for example) is respect and support for the culture and foreign policies of the United States. Another notable fact about his career is that he has focused his full attention on his homeland, ignoring the prospect of an international audience, although his 1981 single "Les lacs du Connemara" did manage to become a big international hit. A number of his hit songs were written in collaboration with Jacques Revaux, a few others (most notably "En chantant") with Italian singer Toto Cutugno.
Even in the 21st century, Michel Sardou remains immensely popular in France, selling out 18 consecutive dates at Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in 2001, while his 2004 album "Du plaisir" went straight to the no. 1 spot on the French album charts.
He has been married three times, first to a French dancer, then to Babette (the mother of his children) and lastly to an lifelong friend who edits the French version of Vogue.
He is currently (2023) at the center of a controversy over a song he wrote fifty years ago: the lakes of Connemara. Juliette Armanet, a French pop starlet answering a question about a song that would made her leave a party and it was LES LACS DU CONNEMARA. Sardou, an idol of the French right, in spite of himself, is stuck between the left which finds him corny and the right which does not support that one attacks its institutions. Music is a strong force and nobody fights harder than those who LOVE certain songs. Amazingly this song has nothing to do with politics.
Du Blues Dans Mes Chansons

Sur mon piano des idées noires
Des nuages sur mon horizon
Elle met du blues dans mes chansons
Elle met de la mélancolie
Sur chacun des mots que j'écris
Un nouveau rythme un autre son
Elle met du blues dans mes chansons
J'ai goûté à tous ses poisons
Qui jettent mes rêves en prison
Où mes blessures portent son nom
Elle met du blues dans mes chansons
Elle fait pleuvoir sur mes paroles
Les vieux accords d'une guitare folle
Un bruit d'enfer à la maison
Un pied de batterie dans le coeur
Un raz de marée de chaleur
Elle met l'amour dans mes chansons
Il y a du flou dans ma mémoire
Sur ma musique y'a du brouillard
Un grand point d'orgue à l'horizon
Elle met du blues dans mes chansons
Elle met de la mélancolie
Sur chacun des mots que j'écris
Un nouveau rythme un nouveau son
Elle met du blues dans mes chansons
Elle me fait chanter comme une folle
Les vieux accords d'un rock'n'roll
Je m'sens perdu et j'suis pas beau
Elle me fait fumer toutes les fleurs
Elle me fait rire elle me fait peur
Elle met du blues dans mes chansons
Y'a du spleen dans mon histoire
Sur mon piano des idées noires
Des nuages sur mon horizon
Elle met du blues dans mes chansons
The lyrics of Michel Sardou's song "Du Blues Dans Mes Chansons" embody the sorrowful, melancholic, and troubled emotions that suffuse the songwriter's inner life. The singer's life is plagued with despair and uncertainty, and he has come to associate his creative expression with this profound pain. On his piano, the singer wrestles with "idées noires" (dark thoughts) and feels disconnected from his creative work. The clouds on his horizon are heavy with sorrow, and he cannot escape from the feeling that his life is sinking deeper and deeper into a blues-like mire.
The song's chorus highlights the extent to which the singer's life is infused with sadness and despair. The woman in his life adds "du blues dans mes chansons" (blues to my songs), imbuing each word he writes with a sense of melancholy. However, even though the woman seems to bring pain and sorrow into the singer's life, she is also the cause of great joy and love. Her presence is like rain on parched soil, and her love fills his heart with warmth and tenderness. She is a challenge to the singer - he must navigate the complexities of her presence in his life, but ultimately, she is an indelible part of his creative work.
