He was born in Paris, the son of Fernand Sardou and Jackie Rollin (Jackie Sardou). Contrary to what has been written at the beginning of his career, he is not the grandson of the dramatist Victorien Sardou.
He is known for songs dealing with various social and political issues, such as the rights of women in Islamic countries, clerical celibacy and colonialism. Another sometimes controversial theme found in some of his songs ("Les Ricains," for example) is respect and support for the culture and foreign policies of the United States. Another notable fact about his career is that he has focused his full attention on his homeland, ignoring the prospect of an international audience, although his 1981 single "Les lacs du Connemara" did manage to become a big international hit. A number of his hit songs were written in collaboration with Jacques Revaux, a few others (most notably "En chantant") with Italian singer Toto Cutugno.
Even in the 21st century, Michel Sardou remains immensely popular in France, selling out 18 consecutive dates at Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in 2001, while his 2004 album "Du plaisir" went straight to the no. 1 spot on the French album charts.
He has been married three times, first to a French dancer, then to Babette (the mother of his children) and lastly to an lifelong friend who edits the French version of Vogue.
He is currently (2023) at the center of a controversy over a song he wrote fifty years ago: the lakes of Connemara. Juliette Armanet, a French pop starlet answering a question about a song that would made her leave a party and it was LES LACS DU CONNEMARA. Sardou, an idol of the French right, in spite of himself, is stuck between the left which finds him corny and the right which does not support that one attacks its institutions. Music is a strong force and nobody fights harder than those who LOVE certain songs. Amazingly this song has nothing to do with politics.

Meler le sel avec le sang
Et ne plus jamais en finir
Forcer l'envie pour le plaisir
Il y a l'amour et l'amour fou
Celui du corps par dessus tout
Celui qui se donne et se prend
Qui se libère quand il se rend
Et puis après
Aller encore plus loin
Et puis après
Se souvenir de rien
S'aimer au dessus du désir
Et tout au bout vouloir mourir
Et puis après
Je n'en sais rien
Choisir de n'plus jamais dormir
Forcer son corps à en souffrir
Et puis s'effondrer dans nos bras
Et tout refaire, encore une fois
Au dieu que nos amour sont belles
Un ciel plus profond que le ciel
Un nuit sans lune, firmament
Monter et s'y noyer dedans
Et puis après
Plus loin encore plus loin
Et puis après
A s'en briser les reins
S'aimer au delà du plaisir
Forcer l'envie pour en finir
Et puis après
Et puis après
On se sépare enfin
Et puis après
On n'se souvient de rien
S'aimer à effacer le temps
Meler le sel avec le sang
Et puis après
Je n'en sais rien
Nous verrons bien
Et puis après
The lyrics of Michel Sardou's song "Et Puis Après" tell a story about a passionate and intense love affair. The song explores the idea of pushing the boundaries of love, going beyond desire and pleasure. It suggests that love can be so powerful that it erases time and merges the physical and emotional aspects of a relationship. The lyrics describe a love that is all-consuming and exhilarating, where the couple wants to go further and further, even to the point of wanting to die together. The song captures the intoxicating feeling of being completely lost in love and willing to do anything for it.
The repetition of the phrase "Et puis après" (And then after) throughout the song indicates the constant desire to go beyond what has already been experienced. It suggests a restless nature, always seeking the next level of intensity. The lyrics also touch on the idea of forgetting everything that happens after the passionate moments, perhaps implying that these intense emotions and experiences cannot be easily retained or understood.
Overall, "Et Puis Après" portrays a love that is both beautiful and dangerous, where boundaries are pushed and consequences are ignored in the pursuit of greater intensity and connection.
