He was bor… Read Full Bio ↴Michel Sardou (born January 26, 1947) is a French singer.
He was born in Paris, the son of Fernand Sardou and Jackie Rollin (Jackie Sardou). Contrary to what has been written at the beginning of his career, he is not the grandson of the dramatist Victorien Sardou.
He is known for songs dealing with various social and political issues, such as the rights of women in Islamic countries, clerical celibacy and colonialism. Another sometimes controversial theme found in some of his songs ("Les Ricains," for example) is respect and support for the culture and foreign policies of the United States. Another notable fact about his career is that he has focused his full attention on his homeland, ignoring the prospect of an international audience, although his 1981 single "Les lacs du Connemara" did manage to become a big international hit. A number of his hit songs were written in collaboration with Jacques Revaux, a few others (most notably "En chantant") with Italian singer Toto Cutugno.
Even in the 21st century, Michel Sardou remains immensely popular in France, selling out 18 consecutive dates at Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in 2001, while his 2004 album "Du plaisir" went straight to the no. 1 spot on the French album charts.
He has been married three times, first to a French dancer, then to Babette (the mother of his children) and lastly to an lifelong friend who edits the French version of Vogue.
He is currently (2023) at the center of a controversy over a song he wrote fifty years ago: the lakes of Connemara. Juliette Armanet, a French pop starlet answering a question about a song that would made her leave a party and it was LES LACS DU CONNEMARA. Sardou, an idol of the French right, in spite of himself, is stuck between the left which finds him corny and the right which does not support that one attacks its institutions. Music is a strong force and nobody fights harder than those who LOVE certain songs. Amazingly this song has nothing to do with politics.

Ça casse ou ça tient
Réponds-moi gentiment
"Où tu vas quand j'éteins?"
Avons-nous réussi
L'étrange examen?
Et sommes-nous aujourd'hui
Parlons de toi, de moi
Est-ce qu'un homme a compté?
Y-a t'il eu quelqu'un?
Ton corps l'a-t-il aimé
Aussi fort, aussi bien?
Ai-je été décevant?
Que suis-je à tes yeux?
Un mari, un amant
Un témoin silencieux?
Parlons de toi, de moi
C'est d'abord un refus
Un "oui" déguisé
Un malaise ambigu
Moins envie de s'aimer
Je sais qu'on n'retient pas
Une femme qui s'enfuit
Quand le désir s'en va
Tout s'achève avec lui
Parlons de toi, de moi
On dit qu'après dix ans
Ça casse ou ça tient
Réponds-moi gentiment
"Où tu vas quand j'éteins?"
Avons-nous réussi
L'étrange examen?
Et sommes-nous aujourd'hui
Moins unis que demain?
Parlons de toi, de moi
The lyrics of Michel Sardou's song "Parlons De Toi De Moi" revolve around the theme of evaluating a relationship after some time has passed. The first stanza of the song sets the stage by acknowledging the popular adage that relationships either break or hold strong after ten years. The singer then asks his partner what they do when the lights go out, subtly referring to their intimate moments.
The chorus asks some soul-searching questions, wondering if they have passed the "strange exam" of sustaining a relationship. The lines "Parlons de toi, de moi" translated to English means "Let us talk about you, me." It's an introspective journey that leads to questioning if they have remained as united as they were before.
The second stanza of the song asks whether any other man has mattered to his partner, leaving the question hanging on whether they were emotionally secure in their relationship. The singer also wonders if he has let his partner down and what his role in her life is.
The third stanza seems to denote the start of the end of the relationship. The singer mentions the "malaise ambigu," meaning an inexplicable feeling of discomfort, which is leading to less desire to be with each other. He also knows that one cannot hold onto a woman once she decides to leave.
"Parlons De Toi De Moi" is about introspection, evaluation, and self-awareness in a relationship. While the song may feel heavy, it's a gentle reminder that relationships need regular maintenance and communication to sustain.
