He was born in Paris, the son of Fernand Sardou and Jackie Rollin (Jackie Sardou). Contrary to what has been written at the beginning of his career, he is not the grandson of the dramatist Victorien Sardou.
He is known for songs dealing with various social and political issues, such as the rights of women in Islamic countries, clerical celibacy and colonialism. Another sometimes controversial theme found in some of his songs ("Les Ricains," for example) is respect and support for the culture and foreign policies of the United States. Another notable fact about his career is that he has focused his full attention on his homeland, ignoring the prospect of an international audience, although his 1981 single "Les lacs du Connemara" did manage to become a big international hit. A number of his hit songs were written in collaboration with Jacques Revaux, a few others (most notably "En chantant") with Italian singer Toto Cutugno.
Even in the 21st century, Michel Sardou remains immensely popular in France, selling out 18 consecutive dates at Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in 2001, while his 2004 album "Du plaisir" went straight to the no. 1 spot on the French album charts.
He has been married three times, first to a French dancer, then to Babette (the mother of his children) and lastly to an lifelong friend who edits the French version of Vogue.
He is currently (2023) at the center of a controversy over a song he wrote fifty years ago: the lakes of Connemara. Juliette Armanet, a French pop starlet answering a question about a song that would made her leave a party and it was LES LACS DU CONNEMARA. Sardou, an idol of the French right, in spite of himself, is stuck between the left which finds him corny and the right which does not support that one attacks its institutions. Music is a strong force and nobody fights harder than those who LOVE certain songs. Amazingly this song has nothing to do with politics.
Tuez-Moi

Dans le ventre d'une blonde
Un enfant qui me survivra
Un goût de cendre et de terre
Un peu de sang sur les pierres
C'est tout ce qu'il aura de moi
Tuez-moi, tuez-moi
Je porte en moi la souffrance
Et les chagrins de l'enfance
Mon désespoir me survivra
Tuez-moi
Je porte en moi la colère
Les cheveux blancs de mon père
Il a toujours eu peur de moi
Tuez-moi, tuez-moi
J'ai laissé au bout du monde
Dans le ventre d'une blonde
Un enfant qui me survivra
Un goût de cendre et de peine
Un peu de sang dans ses veines
C'est tout ce qu'il aura de moi
Tuez-moi, tuez-moi
Je vous jure que je vais faire
Un grand séjour en enfer
Tous mes copains habitent là
Tuez-moi
Comme eux, j'ai le goût de l'ombre
Mais avant les catacombes
Rendez-moi ce service-là
Tuez-moi
Tuez-moi comme ça vous chante
De mort violente, de mort lente
Sous un couteau, sur une croix
Tuez-moi, tuez-moi
Tuez-moi, tuez-moi
The lyrics to Michel Sardou's song Tuez-Moi depict a man who is tormented by his past and feels like he has nothing left to live for. He reveals that he has a child with a woman he left behind and that the child is the only thing that will survive him. He feels a sense of hopelessness, describing his life as a taste of ash and earth with only a bit of his blood left on the stones. He asks to be killed, to end his pain and suffering.
The lyrics continue to convey the man's feelings of anger and resentment towards his father, whom he says feared him. The man is carrying not only his own pain and sorrow but also that of his childhood. He feels like he has nothing to lose, as he is willing to trade this life for a place in hell where he can be with his friends. He begs for someone to put an end to his misery, to kill him swiftly or slowly, however, they please.
The lyrics of Tuez-Moi are haunting and express the deep emotional turmoil of someone who has lost all hope. The song reflects on the fragility of life and how the weight of past experiences can weigh down on someone until they feel like they cannot bear it anymore.
