He was born in Paris, the son of Fernand Sardou and Jackie Rollin (Jackie Sardou). Contrary to what has been written at the beginning of his career, he is not the grandson of the dramatist Victorien Sardou.
He is known for songs dealing with various social and political issues, such as the rights of women in Islamic countries, clerical celibacy and colonialism. Another sometimes controversial theme found in some of his songs ("Les Ricains," for example) is respect and support for the culture and foreign policies of the United States. Another notable fact about his career is that he has focused his full attention on his homeland, ignoring the prospect of an international audience, although his 1981 single "Les lacs du Connemara" did manage to become a big international hit. A number of his hit songs were written in collaboration with Jacques Revaux, a few others (most notably "En chantant") with Italian singer Toto Cutugno.
Even in the 21st century, Michel Sardou remains immensely popular in France, selling out 18 consecutive dates at Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in 2001, while his 2004 album "Du plaisir" went straight to the no. 1 spot on the French album charts.
He has been married three times, first to a French dancer, then to Babette (the mother of his children) and lastly to an lifelong friend who edits the French version of Vogue.
He is currently (2023) at the center of a controversy over a song he wrote fifty years ago: the lakes of Connemara. Juliette Armanet, a French pop starlet answering a question about a song that would made her leave a party and it was LES LACS DU CONNEMARA. Sardou, an idol of the French right, in spite of himself, is stuck between the left which finds him corny and the right which does not support that one attacks its institutions. Music is a strong force and nobody fights harder than those who LOVE certain songs. Amazingly this song has nothing to do with politics.

The lyrics to Michel Sardou's song "Une Femme Ma Fille" explore the qualities and actions that define a strong and loving woman. The song begins by presenting the idea that a woman should be able to accept the fact that a man may be physically stronger, but she can find strength in love and connection. It emphasizes the importance of a woman's soul aligning with her partner, transcending the physical realm. The lyrics further delve into the notion that a woman should utilize her beauty to please her partner without losing her own identity, resisting the influence of those who want to use her as a witness against her partner. It highlights the understanding that a woman is the source of life and should not be compared to those who destroy it.
The song also touches on the idea of motherhood and the role of a woman in bringing a child into the world as a gift from heaven and a fruit of the earth. It stresses the significance of filling her partner's heart with love and warmth, being supportive, and singing together even when he may sing too loudly. The lyrics emphasize the power a woman possesses on certain occasions, guiding the ship towards a brighter future. In the end, the song celebrates the strength and happiness of a woman when she finds contentment in her partner's joy and realizes that her own happiness shines through his.

If you can bear the idea that he is stronger,
Not in the joys of the heart, but in the games of the body,
Pour te désaltérer à la même fontaine,
To quench your thirst at the same fountain,
If you can unite your soul with his,
If you know how to use your beauty, my dear,
And to please him, adorn yourself with lace,
If the taste of your nights resembles that of kisses,
If you don't listen to the voice of the unloved
Who would desperately want to cite you as a witness
In the trial of the tyrant who caresses your hand,
If you have understood well that you are the source of life,
You have nothing in common with those who destroy it,
If you give him the child he begs you to bear,
Like a gift from heaven, like a fruit of the earth,
If you fill his heart day after day,
With your tender warmth and words of love,
If you can listen to him when he sings too loud
And sing with him to make it less false,
If you take power, on certain stormy nights
To steer the boat, heading towards the right star,
Si tu es,
If you are,
Si tu sais,
If you know,
Si tu fais tout cela,
If you do all of this,
Like the billions of women who have done it before you,
And if in his happiness, you see yours shining,
On that day, you will be a woman, my daughter, my daughter.
