1) MICHELLE is a fresh musical collective hailing from New York City. Weaving in and out of R&B, Pop, Jazz and Indie sounds, the group of six pays homage to these genres through 70s inspired basslines, driving drum beats, plush synths and enticing vocals. Having recently celebrated their first year on the scene as an ensemble, MICHELLE is already solidifying itself as a strong current in a new wave of emerging NYC staples. MICHELLE’s unique stylings are the result of fine-tuned production and arrangements by Julian Kaufman and Charlie Kilgore, with singers Jamee Lockard, Layla Ku, Sofia D’Angelo, and Emma Lee churning out illustrative lyrics and powerful harmonics. Written and recorded in Kaufman’s bedroom over the span of two weeks, their debut album “HEATWAVE” captures a compilation of sentimental moments – snapshots of youth through a New York summer, all immediately recognizable to those who’ve lived them (and those that have wished to).

I'm falling
I don't know
Where to land
I've forgotten how to stand (da-da-da-da, da-da)
In our castle
Away, past the trees
All kissed by the breeze
This is it
Time passes and I'm lost in it all
Looking down
I don't mind how late I'll be
Look at my guy
God, I'm blessed
My breaks just might hurt a little less
We'll share this weight all on my chest
We'll share this weight all on my chest
In our castle
Away past the trees (away, away)
City slickers
All kissed by the breeze
The song "Away" by Michelle touches on some heavy themes of loss, heartbreak, and the struggle to move on. The song's opening lines paint a somber picture, with the singer noting that life "can be cruel" and that the ground seems like it could "swallow us up." From there, we hear about a couple in distress, with the singer holding her lover's hand as they together try to find a way forward.
The sense of upheaval and uncertainty comes through in lines like "life doesn't have an easy way" and "everything changes" - themes that will resonate with anyone who has ever had to start over after a difficult period. But even in the midst of all this turmoil, there is a sense of resilience and hope. The singer talks about taking a trip to the sea and seeking solace in healing waters, and ultimately finds the courage to move on, even if it comes with a sense of loss.
Overall, "Away" is a poignant and reflective song that reminds us that even in our darkest moments, it is possible to find a way forward.
