1) MICHELLE is a fresh musical collective hailing from New York City. Weaving in and out of R&B, Pop, Jazz and Indie sounds, the group of six pays homage to these genres through 70s inspired basslines, driving drum beats, plush synths and enticing vocals. Having recently celebrated their first year on the scene as an ensemble, MICHELLE is already solidifying itself as a strong current in a new wave of emerging NYC staples. MICHELLE’s unique stylings are the result of fine-tuned production and arrangements by Julian Kaufman and Charlie Kilgore, with singers Jamee Lockard, Layla Ku, Sofia D’Angelo, and Emma Lee churning out illustrative lyrics and powerful harmonics. Written and recorded in Kaufman’s bedroom over the span of two weeks, their debut album “HEATWAVE” captures a compilation of sentimental moments – snapshots of youth through a New York summer, all immediately recognizable to those who’ve lived them (and those that have wished to).

Da war die Lust auf die Nacht
Die pure Sehnsucht auf Leben
Und zwischen Traum und Magie
Der rote Mond vis-à-vis
Flog ich dem Wahnsinn entgegen
Hast mich verzaubert
Die Nacht war zu heiss
denn ich weiss
Hokuspokus, alles Hokuspokus
Trag mich zu den Sternen
Gib der Nacht den Glanz
Hokuspokus, alles Hokuspokus
Eine Nacht wie diese
Braucht den Feuertanz
Schleichst in mich rein mit Gefühl
Simsalabim heisst Dein Spiel
Und das ist nicht ungefährlich
Bin in meinen Träumen hellwach
Hey, bunter Vogel der Nacht
Nichts an dem Zauber ist ehrlich
Bist so wie ich
und wir spielen Roulette
Bis mein Kopf mir sagt,
dass nichts mehr geht
Hokuspokus, alles Hokuspokus...
Und wenn Du morgens sagst:
Die Nacht war so schön
Nimm Deinen Zauberstab und sag
Ich möchte' Dich so gern einmal
wiederseh'n
Ich weiss schon wo und wann
Hokuspokus, alles Hokuspokus...
Hokuspokus, alles Hokuspokus...
The lyrics of Michelle's song "Hokus Pokus" describe a night that began innocently, but turned into a wild adventure fueled by lust and the desire for life. The singer was drawn to the magic and mystique of the night, and under the influence of her partner's seduction, she was able to let go of any inhibitions and embrace the madness. The chorus of "Hokuspokus, alles Hokuspokus" reflects the idea that everything in this night was just an illusion, a mirage created by the singer's desire for something more. She was taken to the stars, the night was given a special glow, and she performed a fire dance, all of which were just a product of the magic and fantasy of the night.
The second verse continues the theme of the singer being swept away by her partner's charm and seduction, with the lyrics "Simsalabim heisst Dein Spiel" referring to the partner using their own form of magic to draw her in. The singer realizes that the magic of the night is not entirely benign, and that her dreams and reality are blending together in a potentially dangerous manner. However, she continues to play the game, described as "we play roulette", until her head tells her that she can no longer keep going.
Overall, "Hokus Pokus" is a song about indulging in the magic and mystery of a night, fueled by lust and a passion for life, and being willing to take risks for the sake of experiencing something more.
