She received a guitar from her parents for her 14th birthday. Three years later, after sending a demo tape to Hanson and opening for them on tour, had signed a deal with Maverick Records. Songs like "Something To Sleep To" are musically inspired by The Beatles.
She made her debut in 2000 and released the platinum-selling albums The Spirit Room and Hotel Paper in later years.
The Spirit Room was released in 2001. The album, which was produced by John Shanks (Melissa Etheridge, Chris Isaak), was an immediate hit. The Spirit Room sold 2.5 million copies and earned Branch a Grammy and an MTV Viewer’s Choice Award. The album also spawned three top ten hits.
Michelle performed a duet with Carlos Santana on the album Shaman. The single “The Game of Love” became an international hit. On June 23, 2003, Branch released her second album, Hotel Paper.
In 2004 she formed the band The Wreckers with fellow musician Jessica Harp. Their album "Stand Still Look Pretty" was also released on Maverick Records, although the Wreckers' country sound shocked many of Branch's old fans.
Stand Still, Look Pretty spawned four singles, including “Leave the Pieces,” which reached #1 on the U.S. country chart and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Citing creative differences, the duo have since put the project on hold to work on their own solo projects. Find Your Way Back

Now I can´t get away
I even thought that it was simple
To say the things I wanted to say
And you told me
Everything I wanted to hear
And you sold me
I should know me
And baby, you would think I knew better
[Chorus]
I´m finding my way back to you
And everything I used to be
And waiting is all that I can do
Until you find your way back to me
What if I said what I was thinking?
What if that says too much?
When everybody´s got a reason
I feel like giving up
And you told me
Everything I wanted to hear
And you sold me
Now I don´t know how I should feel
I should know me
And baby, you would think I knew better
[Chorus]
Until you find your way back to me
I used to get away with so much
[Chorus]
In this song, "Find Your Way Back," Michelle Branch sings about trying to reconnect with a past love interest who she feels has betrayed her. She talks about how she used to be able to get away with things and say what she wanted, but now feels lost in the relationship. She questions whether it's worth saying what's on her mind and worries about the consequences.
The first verse suggests that in the past, Branch had a carefree attitude and didn't need to worry about the consequences of her actions. However, the relationship with the person she's singing about has made her feel trapped and unable to express herself fully. Despite this, the person she's singing about continues to say and do things that make her feel hopeful but ultimately leave her confused and unsure of how to proceed.
In the chorus, Branch expresses her desire to regain her sense of self and reconnect with the person who used to know her best. She acknowledges that waiting is hard, but it's all she can do until the person she's singing about finds their way back to her.
Overall, this song is about the struggles of communication and the difficulties of trying to reconnect with someone after a rift has formed between them. Branch's lyrics capture the rollercoaster of emotions that come with trying to reconcile with someone who has hurt you, and the importance of finding your true self in the process.
