Trust Me
Michelle Willis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It broke into me
It became ok
One time then the next
Turned it my way
To make my own perfect paradigm
Mine all mine
Fear it hovered round every time
Oh yet you trust me
You trust me

I spoke I speak
And twist it round
You look me in
And 'neath the muck you found me
Still you fight for me
You pull me out each time you fight for me
Still it comes round me, round yet you
Trust me

This dark old place
Fills me with no grace
I needed truth
and in its place came
Rusty old bones
With a hovering disease
Fear it come and break my knees but I'm standing
When you trust me

Oh what a fight
Is my minds might
The strength of men
Pales in this light
Oh what pain
Oh what sorrow
Comes to the man

Breaks a trust that's borrowed
You trust me

Overall Meaning

The song "Trust Me" by Michelle Willis is an emotional ode to trust and loyalty. The lyrics speak of a relationship where the singer has been broken and hurt, and yet the other person continues to trust and stand by them. The words "It broke into me, It became ok" seem to suggest that something happened in the past which shattered the singer, but with time it has become easier to deal with. The following lines "One time then the next, Turned it my way, To make my own perfect paradigm, Mine all mine, Fear it hovered round every time" show that the singer has taken control of their life and created their own perfect world despite the fear that still lingers.

The second half of the first verse speaks about how the other person in the relationship sees through the singer's defenses and still fights for them. "I spoke I speak, And twist it round, You look me in, And 'neath the muck you found me, Still you fight for me, You pull me out each time you fight for me, Still it comes round me, round yet you, Trust me." The words "beneath the muck you found me" seem to suggest that the singer was broken beyond repair, but the other person saw something in them worth fighting for. The chorus "When you trust me, Oh what a fight, Is my minds might, The strength of men, Pales in this light, Oh what pain, Oh what sorrow, Comes to the man, Breaks a trust that's borrowed, You trust me" showcases the immense power of trust and how it can help someone overcome their personal battles.
