Michelle also recorded "Rock Me Gently," originally written and recorded by Andy Kim in 1974, and included it on her debut album. Signed to Arista Records in 1990, Michelle had her first American country top 40 hit with "New Kind of Love" from her second album, Michelle Wright. She followed up with her most successful album, Now and Then, in 1992. The first single, "Take It Like a Man," was her first Billboard top 10 hit and the video reached #1 on Country Music Television (CMT). She scored her second Billboard top 40 hit with the album's third single, "He Would Be Sixteen."On the strength of "Take It Like a Man," Wright went on to win the Academy of Country Music (ACM) Top New Female Vocalist in 1992, beating out fellow newcomers Martina McBride and Joy Lynn White. "Safe In The Arms Of Love," a track from 1994's The Reasons Why, was later recorded by Martina in 1995."We've Tried Everything Else," a track found on both The Reasons Why and 1996's For Me It's You, was co-written by Pam Tillis and can be found on her 1992 album Homeward Looking Angel. The Wall
Michelle Wright Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
If it was whiskey or gamblin, I could pull you through.
But there's something between us that I can't get around, I can't get over, I can't go under, I can't tear it down.
Chorus I'm up against the wall you built so strong and tall.
You won't let me in so I can never win, cause I'm up against the wall.
If it was money that you needed, I would beg and steal. If you were restless I'd know how you feewl But you keep me at a distance so close and yet so far, I touch your body but you won't let me touch your heart.
Repeat chorus
In Michelle Wright's song, The Wall, the singer expresses her frustration and inability to connect with her partner. The lyrics suggest that while the singer knows how to handle typical vices like gambling or alcoholism or other women, she is unable to navigate the emotional distance that exists between her and her partner. The metaphor of a wall is used to describe the emotional barrier that prevents the couple from connecting. The singer is physically close to her partner, and yet she cannot breach the wall that separates them. She longs to touch her partner's heart, but all she can do is touch their body. Despite her willingness to do anything for her partner, she is up against a "wall" that she cannot move beyond.
The song's meaning is deep and relevant to its audience, as it speaks to anyone who has ever felt emotionally disconnected from their partner or significant other. It highlights the challenges of sustaining a healthy relationship when there is a lack of emotional intimacy, and the frustration that comes with feeling like you are up against an insurmountable obstacle. The song is a beautiful portrayal of the power of emotional distance in relationships and the struggles that people face in trying to overcome it.
