Coming from a family with a keen musical interest, Flannery was introduced to folk and blues music at a young age. He says that he wrote his first song at the age of fifteen. When he was in school he got together with a few local guys and formed a rock band called Black Orange but their gigging history was sporadic and they went their separate ways a few years after. Later, while undergoing a music and management course at Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa in Cork, Flannery commenced writing the album that would become "Evening Train", an eleven-track concept album about the exploits of two brothers. Released in 2007, the album was received positively by critics in Ireland and the United States.
Flannery's second studio album "White Lies" was released on 12 September 2008, achieving a top ten position on the Irish Albums Chart. It later went platinum and was nominated for the Choice Music Prize.
Flannery released his third studio album, Red to Blue, on 30 March 2012.

Grace's Waltz
Mick Flannery Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Put your dancing shoes on
The piano is playing a tune
The lads are on
The night is young
And I want to go waltzing with you
These feet have got no sense of fun
Come on
You're drifting to some different song
You've too much wine
We're out of time
Though nothing about it feels wrong
I guess this is as close as I get
But I won't give up on you yet
So next time you need a partner
Unless I go find another
I'm here to carry the weight for you
I'll lead the way for you when
We go out dancing again
The lyrics of Mick Flannery's song "Grace's Waltz" describe a scene where the singer is asking someone to dance with him at a party. He urges the person to put on their dancing shoes because the piano is playing, the night is young, and he wants to go waltzing with them. However, his partner seems distracted and is drifting to another song, probably due to drinking too much. Despite that, the singer won't give up on the person and insists that he'll be there to carry the weight for them and lead the way when they go out dancing again.
The song's lyrics convey a sense of longing and hopefulness, as the singer wants to connect with a person who seems to be emotionally absent. The "Grace" in the title of the song is likely a reference to the word's meaning of "elegance" or "charm," which could represent the qualities that the singer admires in his dancing partner. The waltz, which is traditionally a graceful and romantic dance, symbolizes the singer's desire to have a deeper connection with the person he's asking to dance with.
