Mickey "Guitar" Baker was a music instructor, and Sylvia Robinson was one of his pupils. His guitar stylings, especially the insane soloing on "Love Is Strange", inspired a plethora of guitarists, including Sterling Morrison of the Velvet Underground.

Mickey & Sylvia had a hit with "Love Is Strange" in 1957. They continued to record together until 1965. After that, Mickey had a successful career as a studio musician. Sylvia had a huge hit (#1 R&B, #3 Pop) in 1973 with the song "Pillow Talk", and later assisted in the formation of the Sugar Hill rap label.

Great track with haunting vocals - and look at all those vintage Gibsons and Fenders! With a collection like that today you could sell up and retire to the Bahamas. I'm looking at my ancient, coverless, heavily annotated copy of Mickey's book as I write this. I'm still working with it after 50 years.

Met Sylvia Robinson several times. Went to school with her son, Joey. Had many after-hoops parties at their home. She was always very gracious. Too bad both Mickey and Sylvia are gone now.

Mickey may have been standing behind an LP Custom on live shows, but his stuff with Sylvia sounds more like that California plank. Don't know for sure.
The early LP's could scream when pushed and both the early Gibson and Fender pickups had that "bell tone" that got lost along the way.

Mickey & Sylvia was one of the Earliest Black musicians to appear "regularly on Television! They say White artist came to Harlem copied Black performers then took the the acts UPTOWN! Then TV came & Black were left out! They mentioned JERRY LEWIS & DEAN MARTIN. Of course you remember THE OSMONDS shadowing THE JACKSON (5). It goes back to the Minstrel Days. The Black Group that preceded MICKEY & SYLVIA on TV was THE BILLY WILLIAMS QUARTET. On the SID CEASAR & EMMA JEAN COCO show!

Buddy Holly recorded as this as a knockabout demo in his apartment with a guitar (Don't take any notice of the overdubbed versions - that is not Buddy's work). M&S version is a full studio master. Personally I love them both, but I take them for what they are.

But it's not a culturally relelvant song and I don't see why you have to put down modern music to enjoy the things you do. Just like there have always been, there will always be songs for dancing that don't necessarily have to mean anything. IDK, you just seem to be upset that young people are being young.
