Neighbors
Microwave Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I forgot my stupid wallet in the car and
We have walked like 7 miles away from where we parked the car
'Cause we wanted food but we were too high to drive
It was a lot farther than I realized

I am just a crooked joke with stale punchline that some old friends quote
The neighbor that you try to ignore, but you wave to so you won't look like an asshole
So I wrote you a new song, and it goes like this:

"I cannot walk all the way back to where we parked"
"I will not walk all the way back to where we parked"
"I cannot walk all the way back to where we parked"
"I will not walk all the way back to where we parked"

So I'll be on the centerfold as the poster child of all the biggest tools
With a caption about being broke and disappointing everyone I know
'Cause I'm too resigned
All my friends think I'm a douche now and they're probably right
But "this is the life,"
Tito says inside your pool, his arms stretched out across the side

And I am just a crooked joke with a stale punchline that some old friends quote

The neighbor that you try to ignore
But you have to wave 'cause I'm waving from my porch

Overall Meaning

The first verse of Microwave's song "Neighbors" describes a situation where the singer and their friend forgot their wallet in their car and have walked a great distance away from where they parked in order to find food. The singer acknowledges that they were too high to drive and that the journey was longer than they initially thought. The second verse sees the singer in a self-deprecating state of mind, joking about being the neighbor everyone ignores but feels obligated to wave to so they don't come across as rude. The chorus features the singer repeating that they will not walk all the way back to where they parked their car. The third verse plays with the idea of being seen as a tool or disappointment to those around them, acknowledging that their friends might be right in thinking they're a douche. Despite all this, there's a sense of acceptance in the final lines of the song, as the singer waves triumphantly from their porch.
