Young Bride
Midlake Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My young bride,
Why are your shoulders like that
Of a tired old woman,
Like a tired old woman?

My young bride,
Why are your fingers like that
Of the hedge in winter,
Of the hedge in winter?

Polonaise in winter,
Snowshoes and hunters
Carried the goods in for you.
Darkness and forests grant you
The longest
Face made for porridge and stew.

My young bride,
Why aren't you moving at all,
Helps to make the day seem shorter,
Helps to make the day seem shorter.

My young bride,
Why aren't you keeping with you
All the ones who really love you,
All the ones who really love you?

Polonaise in winter,
Snowshoes and hunters
Carried the goods in for you.
Darkness and forests grant you

The longest
Face made for porridge and stew.

Overall Meaning

The song "Young Bride" by Midlake is a beautifully melancholic and introspective piece that delves into the complexities of life and love. The opening line of the song, "My young bride, why are your shoulders like that of a tired old woman?" sets the tone for the rest of the song, as the singer addresses his beloved, questioning her demeanor and what might be weighing on her mind. The lyrics continue to explore the theme of weariness and sadness, as the singer observes her stillness and lack of movement, asking why she isn't keeping those who love her close.

The repeated refrain of "Polonaise in winter, snowshoes and hunters carried the goods in for you" adds to the feeling of melancholy, as the singer reflects on the idea of someone being taken care of or provided for during the harsh winter months. The imagery of darkness and forests also serves to amplify the sense of isolation and loneliness in the song. The closing lines of the song, "The longest face made for porridge and stew" is a haunting image that leaves the listener with a sense of sadness and longing.

I was only 17! 33 now, but revisiting this album it’s even better than when I first got into it. This album makes me think of getting lost in the woods getting stoned with my friends

Hve been cherishing this song for a few years now. I was biking through the snowy woods a few days back and it remindedme of this song. I started whistling this tune and on the third note my bike slipped from underneath me landing me flat on my back looking up at the sky. Great moment, great ride, amazing song. Thank you Midlake
