Long Hard Ride
Midnight Choir Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There, there's no room for you and I
You and me baby were born on the dark side
And our love for a long hard ride
What's good about love
That's easily conquered
What's good about love
What's good about love
That leaves you shattered
Like windows broken by blast
There, there's no way to freedom
There, there's no way for you and I
You and me baby were born on the dark side
And our love for a long hard ride
What's good about love
That moves too fast
What's good about love
That pulls the trigger
Before any questions are asked
There, there's no way to freedom
There, there's no way for you and I
You and me baby were born on the dark side
And our love for a long hard ride
And our love for a long hard ride
The Midnight Choir's song Long Hard Ride is a powerful portrayal of a tumultuous and intense relationship that is destined to fail. The opening of the song is particularly bleak, with the singer lamenting that there is no room for craziness or love between the two people in question. The sense of hopelessness is further compounded by the repeated references to being "born on the dark side," suggesting that their destiny has been predetermined and that their troubled relationship is simply a manifestation of a broader existential malaise.
In the second half of the song, the lyrics explore the theme of what makes love worthwhile. The singer asks a series of rhetorical questions, each of which suggests that true love is not easy, nor should it be. Love that is easily conquered or that moves too fast is not worth fighting for, as it will inevitably fizzle out. Instead, the true value of love lies in its ability to withstand the tests and challenges of life, to endure even when everything else seems to be falling apart.
Overall, Long Hard Ride is a haunting meditation on the nature of love and relationships. It is a reminder that love is rarely easy, but it is always worth fighting for if it is real.
