The group was formed in 1976 at Kentucky State University by the Calloway brothers (trumpeter Reginald, and trombone player Vincent), with vocalist Belinda Lipscomb. Signing to RCA Records, they released their first album, The Beginning in 1980, with a host of studio musicians. In 1982, they moved to SOLAR Records, and releasing a second album, Victory now with a real band behind them (guitarist Melvin Gentry, bassist Kenneth Gant, drummer Bobby Lovelace, multi-instrumentalist Bill Simmons and keyboard player Bo Watson).
Due to the Calloways' production skills, it didn't take long for Midnight Star to connect with black listeners, hitting the R&B charts with early singles like "Hot Spot" and "I've Been Watching You." Their fourth album, No Parking on the Dance Floor released in 1983, took them to the top of the charts with the first single, "Freak-A-Zoid," which went to number two, on the R&B charts and propelled the album to platinum status. Their next album, Planetary Invasion was almost as big, going platinum again and making the pop Top 20 and the number one spot on the R&B charts with its first single, "Operator."
In 1986, they came out with their sixth album, Headlines, which was their third album to sell at least gold. It was not to be their last, as the Calloways departed in 1988. The group retooled, now down to seven members they produced and recorded their self-titled Midnight Star album. The single "Don't Rock the Boat" featured a rap by Ecstasy from the group Whodini. It would reach number 3 on the R&B charts. The album would also be certified gold.
In 1990 the band recorded Work It Out, their last album for Solar Records with internal problems between the distributor and record label the project was doomed. One of the standout tracks was called "Money Can't Buy You Love" a Belinda Lipscomb composition.
After 13 years of recording, touring, dealing with band issues, and label politics the group took a
long over due hiatus. They remained active in the business doing individual projects with Melvin Gentry and Bo Watson creating the production team "Bo & McArthur" writing, recording, and producing hits for Shanice Wilson and Toni Braxton. Bo also served as Music Director for Babyface on MTV Unplugged concert series and CD recording that featured Stevie Wonder and Eric Clapton.
Belinda Lipscomb found success singing on Emmy nominated TV and Radio commerials. She also landed lead roles in several musicals and gospel plays. Bassist Kenneth Gant became a record producer and executive for an LA based label. Bobby Lovelace and Bill Simmons worked on many music and media related projects. Jeff Cooper decided to retire from performing and create a music publication dedicated to educating young music hopefuls about the pros and cons of the music industry.
After a few years, the members began calling each other to see how they were doing. It became obvious during those conversations that the performing bug had hit them. It was time to give themselves and fans what they all were missing, a Midnight Star Reunion. The band quickly reformed and were back out on the concert circuit. In 1999 Capitol Records/Right Stuff released Midnight Star "Anniversary Collection" this CD covered many of their past hits. It also gave the band the opportunity to contribute a brand new "Slow Jam Live" and Freak-A-Zoid track for the CD.
In 2002 the band released their first album in over 12 years, entitled "15th Avenue. Today the band continues to perform for audiences all over the world. You can catch up with the band on their website.

Don't Rock The Boat
Midnight Star Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The guy was too fresh, the girl was too fly
They've been together for a very long time
When they felt the sense of change in the state of their mind
They had a true love, but they just didn't know
How to talk to one another, so the feelings could show
To each other they wouldn't devote
Don’t rock that boat, baby
If it ain't broke, don’t fix it
Just relax and let it flow
You and I together, boy, we made a perfect pair
Till we got those inner feelings and played those games of truth and dare
No, I’m not one to regret but I know I did you wrong
And it’s so hard to forget how you loved me all night long
I tried to understand my feelings why I ever played on you
In these days of danger, I really should be true
It ain't worth those silly chances to be a fool whenever I date
From right now to forever let’s remember this simple phrase
Don’t rock that boat
Don’t rock that boat, baby
If it ain't broke, don’t fix it
Just relax and let it flow
Don’t rock the boat
Don’t rock that boat, baby
If it don't fit, don’t force it
Just chill out and let it flow
Don’t rock the boat
Don’t rock that boat, baby
D-don’t do it, don’t do it
Don’t do, d-don’t, don’t
Foolishly I play the field to satisfy myself
But the true satisfaction comes from you and no one else
Ooh, you don’t have to worry ‘cause I feel the same way too
And I’ll never touch another, baby, I’m savin' my love for you
We were lucky, we found out in time
Now that we know the truth, sugar, things will work out fine
We will stay together and we’ll never drift apart
I knew just what to do to keep you in my heart
Don’t rock that boat
Let me tell you a story ‘bout a girl and a guy
The guy was too fresh, the girl was too fly
They've been together for a very long time
When they felt the sense of change in the state of their mind
They had a true love, but they just didn't know
How to talk to one another, so the feelings could show
To each other they wouldn't devote
Had to throw in that rope, had to rock that boat
The girl wanted love that was gigantic
But love was drfitin' like The Titanic
Not just knee deep, it was total knee deep
When the fly girl had to stop for keys
Who were rockin’ those freaks ahoy
She said to herself, “What’s wrong with that boy?”
To each other we should devote
Please love each other, stop rockin’ that boat
Don’t rock that boat, baby
If it ain't broke, don’t fix it
Just relax and let it flow
Don’t rock the boat
Don’t rock that boat, baby
If it don’t fit, don’t force it
Just chill out and let it flow
The song Don't Rock the Boat by Midnight Star is a story of a girl and a guy who have been together for a long time, but they are unable to express their feelings to each other. They both have a hidden sense of change in their minds, but they don't know how to share it with their partner. The song advises them not to "rock the boat" and to maintain the status quo if everything is working fine. The lyrics emphasize the importance of communication and understanding in a relationship, as well as being faithful and honest with each other.
The chorus of the song, “Don’t rock that boat, baby, if it ain't broke, don’t fix it, just relax and let it flow”, serves as a reminder that sometimes it’s better not to make any waves in a relationship and to let things be. The girl in the song confesses to her partner that she played games of truth and dare, and although she does not regret it, she feels badly for what she did. The guy in the song had played the field, but soon discovered that true satisfaction came from being with his girl.
Overall, the lyrics of the song elude to the idea of taking good care of a relationship and not being reckless with it. The song sends the message that if you have something good, you should hold on to it and cherish it.
