Midtown Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every notion of sensation
Has already left my body
Every bone that started breaking
Is a cause for celebration

So now I wait for...
I hope I can make it through these days
These days

Every night's a celebration
Every night's a f**king party
There's no reason for salvation
This irony was all we wanted

So now I wait for
I hope I can make it through these days
These days, these days

Trying to understand as someone else
Trying to pull myself from underground
Trying to understand I'm someone else
Trying to stand as my legs begin to bend

Because everything breaks as it changes
Everything crumbles to the sea
Everything fails as I am fading

Out a memory
Out again

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Midtown's song "Celebration" are introspective, bordering on melancholic. The opening lines, "Every notion of sensation has already left my body. Every bone that started breaking is a cause for celebration", paint a picture of somebody who has been through a lot and is now feeling almost numb. The idea that something as painful as broken bones could be a cause for celebration speaks to the idea that the person has been through something and has now come out the other side.

The chorus, "Every night's a celebration, every night's a f**king party. There's no reason for salvation, this irony was all we wanted", adds to the melancholy tone of the song. Instead of celebrating something positive, the person is celebrating the pain they have been through because it has led them to where they are now. The irony of it all is that they didn't necessarily want to be where they are, but they are here nonetheless.

The bridge of the song, "Trying to understand as someone else. Trying to pull myself from underground. Trying to understand I'm someone else. Trying to stand as my legs begin to bend", seems to be about the struggle of trying to be someone new or different, while still feeling like the same old person. The repetition of the line "Trying to understand" shows that the person is trying to make sense of who they are, but they are struggling. The legs bending could be a metaphor for the effort it takes to change oneself.
