Lady Jane
Mika Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lady Jane the river saint
Special yes but lucky ain't
Lady Jane said she walked on water but she never had a man to show
Then one day she found a fella she was eager just to let him know
Lady Jane she walked on water
Followed by her brand new lover who tumbled along, drownin' down below

Lady Jane did not abort
For legends are never made that short
Now be sure when you listen to this
Here's another reason why you shouldn't eat fish
Convinced he'd become a creature of the sea
She cut off her feet and jumped into the deep
And never stopped looking for her lover below

Lady Jane the river fish
Became the world's most wanted dish
And though no man would dare to catch
Something whose beauty we could never match
But when some member from a far away state
Said "I order you to get that fish's head on my plate!"
They killed little Lady Jane

The emperor of a distant land
The only man who didn't understand
That though you think you've got your prize
There's another fish that has escaped your eyes
Lady Jane, her lover's there
Swimming through the ocean with a desperate stare

Overall Meaning

Mika's song Lady Jane tells the story of a woman who has a special gift, however, she never had luck in finding love. Lady Jane claims to have walked on water, but she was never able to show anyone. One day, Lady Jane found a man she was eager to tell about her special ability. She confidently walked on water, followed by her brand new lover who stumbled and drowned down below.

Lady Jane was determined not to abort her baby because legends are never made that short. The song emphasizes the idea that we should cherish the things we have while we have them because we might not always have them. Lady Jane loved her lover so much that she convinced herself that she needed to become a fish to be with him. She cut off her feet and jumped into the deep, and never stopped looking for her lover below.

Lady Jane's story ends tragically, as she is judged by someone who doesn't understand the beauty of her gift. Lady Jane, the river fish, becomes the world's most wanted dish. Although no man dared to catch her, someone from a faraway state orders to have her head on his plate. Lady Jane's lover is still searching for her as she has become a part of the ocean, and he is swimming through the ocean with a desperate stare, looking for Lady Jane.

Overall, Mika uses the story of Lady Jane to remind us that we should value and appreciate the unique abilities and characteristics that make us special, even if others do not understand or appreciate them.

I think Lady Jane, as mentioned in the lyrics, is a saint - so of course she can both swim and walk on water. But she chose to cut off her feet, somehow I guess this is a metaphor when two people are deeply in love, they can sacrifice anything for one another. A river saint without her feet, she obviously becomes no more than a fish itself. She's been looking for her lover, having no idea that he is doing the same thing. Until she was caught and killed. Life gives us challenges, just because you're in love doesn't mean you win. Some luckily overcome it, some don't and their love story comes to an end. This song is so beautiful but so sad as well. I actually cried listening to it though!
