Overrated
Mika Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Words get broken
Cut me open
Love confound me
Kill me quickly
Breathe out breathe in
Throw me living
Off the deep end
While I'm sleeping

I'm a crazy fool
I'm a fool addicted
To the touch of you
To your poison kisses
What you got to lose?
What do you think this is?
Nothing left to prove
And we know that love is

Overrated
Overrated in this goddamn world
Overrated
Overrated in this goddamn world
Overrated, overrated
Overrated in this goddamn world
Overrated, overrated
Overrated in this goddamn world

Stars are magic
Life is tragic
Crime of passion
I'm just asking

Offered up my wrist
And you thought you hit it
But your arrow missed
Couldn't kill me with it
All I asked of you
Was to free my pain
So you couldn't do
This to me again

Overrated, overrated, overrated
Overrated in this goddamn world

Words get broken (overrated, overrated)
Cut me open (overrated in this goddamn world)
Breathe out breathe in (overrated, overrated)
Throw me living (overrated in this goddamn world)
Words get broken (overrated, overrated)
Cut me open (overrated in this goddamn world)
Stars are magic (overrated, overrated)
Life is tragic (overrated in this goddamn world)

Overrated, overrated
Overrated in this goddamn world

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Mika's song "Overrated" are about the toxicity of love and how it can leave a person feeling broken and confused. The opening lines "Words get broken, Cut me open" speaks to how love can be black and white, where communication and trust can be lost, leading to a break down in understanding one another. The line "Love confound me, Kill me quickly" shows how love can confuse a person, leading them to feel trapped and helpless. The lyrics then move to the chorus, where Mika describes how love can be seen as overrated in this goddamn world, where the vulnerability of feeling and expressing love is not understood.

The second verse of the song speaks more metaphorically about love, "Stars are magic, Life is tragic, Crime of passion, I'm just asking" suggesting that the beauty of love can also be tragic and sometimes seen as a crime. The following lines "Offered up my wrist, And you thought you hit it, But your arrow missed, Couldn't kill me with it" suggests that the person offering their love was met with rejection or heartbreak but still found a way to move past it. The chorus repeats, emphasizing that the "god damn world" overrates love, the pressure to feel and express love is unrealistically high.
