King Herod's Song
Mike D'Abo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Jesus, I am overjoyed to meet you face to face.
You've been getting quite a name all around the place.
Healing cripples, raising from the dead.
And now I understand you're God,
At least, that's what you've said.
So, you are the Christ, you're the great Jesus Christ.
Prove to me that you're divine; change my water into wine.
That's all you need do, then I'll know it's all true.
Come on, King of the Jews.
Jesus, you just won't believe the hit you've made around here.
You are all we talk about, the wonder of the year.
Oh what a pity if it's all a lie.
Still, I'm sure that you can rock the cynics if you tried.
So, you are the Christ, you're the great Jesus Christ.
Prove to me that you're no fool; walk across my swimming pool.
If you do that for me, then I'll let you go free.
Come on, King of the Jews.
I only ask what I'd ask any superstar.
What is it that you have got that puts you where you are.
I am waiting, yes I'm a captive fan.
I'm dying to be shown that you are not just any man.
So, if you are the Christ, yes the great Jesus Christ
Feed my household with this bread.
You can do it on your head.
Or has something gone wrong. Jesus, why do you take so long?
Oh come on, King of the Jews.
Hey! Aren't you scared of me Christ?
Mr. Wonderful Christ?
You're a joke. You're not the Lord.
You are nothing but a fraud.
Take him away.
He's got nothing to say!
Get out you King of the,
Get out King of the,
Oh get out you King of the Jews!
Get out of here!

Get out of here you,
Get out of my life!

Overall Meaning

Mike D'Abo's King Herod's Song is a conversation between King Herod, a powerful figure in Judea in the time of Jesus, and Jesus himself. Herod is intrigued by the stories of Jesus healing cripples and raising people from the dead, and wants to believe in him as the son of God. However, he is also a bit of a cynic, and challenges Jesus to prove his divinity by performing miracles.

The lyrics are a commentary on the human tendency to idolize public figures, to place them on pedestals and demand that they prove themselves worthy of their status. Herod's attitude towards Jesus is ambiguous - he admires him, but also wants to see him fail. He is both fascinated by and skeptical of Jesus' claims to be the son of God.

Overall, King Herod's Song is a cautionary tale about the dangers of hero worship and the need to question authority and challenge those in power.

Best King Herod, by far.
He has the voice, delivery, energy, perfect ad libs.
Plus, unlike all the others, he actually sings the intro (perfectly!).

When I was a kid, we would listen to this often. We would read the word in the booklet and sing along. This was my dad's favorite song on it. "Get Out Of My Life". He loved saying that. My dad passed today and I am adding this to the Memorial Playlist I am making for him.

This version is so much better than the movie and the other one. His voice is just more powerful here and he is actually singing and not just talking like in the movie.
