Flying Start
Mike Oldfield Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We took a place in the sun to see just what had become.
The warm wind blows constantly.
Does the answer still blow? Did you find your chateau
In that Mediterranean fantasy?
Flying start
Made the Whole World sing, they had no choice.
Flying start.
Like a shining pearl, they sang in one voice.
To where the sun always shines, familiar faces and wines.
The warm wind blows constantly.
Knock on the door, but the memory's poor.
Is there somebody in? Now answer me!
Two dark eyes from the doorway shine.
So you lost your dream in a bottle of wine.
I knew you had to do it your way, fine,
But there's none to carry the cross this time.
Flying start
Made the Whole World sing, they had no choice.
Flying start.
Like a shining pearl, they sang in one voice.
On dusty roads and tracks. Now it's the time to turn back.
The warm winds blow constantly.
Riding that storm since the day you were born.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Mike Oldfield's "Flying Start" is a reflection on the life of an individual who has started off with a lot of potential and promise. The "Flying start" refers to the early success and the momentum that the person had. However, as time passes, memories seem to fade and the person seems to be lost in his own world. The lyrics capture the essence of a person who was once destined for greatness but lost his way in the end, leaving a void behind.

The opening line 'We took a place in the sun to see just what had become' indicates that the song is a reflection on what has become of this person's life. The warm wind blowing constantly further implies the passage of time, and the question 'Does the answer still blow?' echoes the sense of confusion that the person feels.

The lyrics towards the end of the song 'Riding that storm since the day you were born' and 'But there's none to carry the cross this time' signifies the struggle and despair that the person feels, with a sense of realization that all the early success has faded. The outstanding track on a very underrated Mike Oldfield album, Islands. Superb vocals from the late Kevin Ayers.

Russ Bellinger

"Islands" was one of my favorite records during the 80s. Kevin's appearance is priceless. I owned most of Kevin's work on vinyl during the 70s. Nice to see this video cleaned up a little bit. Thank you!

Wow! Glad I found this artist, he is so unique and an actual root of many new sound bands.

Thank you for that, it brings back many great memories.
My son and I performed this with friends at a concert about 12 or so years ago, I did lead verse vocals and the knock on the door, with my son on guitar and chorus vocals, the keyboard player had the "Bottle of wine" lyrics. So much fun.
