In the Beginning
Mike Oldfield Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

And the earth was without form, and void;
And darkness was upon the face of the deep.

And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

And God said,
Let there be light
And there was light.

And God saw the light,
That it was good...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Mike Oldfield's "In the Beginning" can be interpreted as a poetic retelling of the Biblical creation story. The opening lines "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth" set the scene for the story of how the universe was created. The following lines describe the state of the earth before God's intervention: it was "without form, and void" and shrouded in darkness.

The image of the "Spirit of God" moving upon the face of the waters is particularly poignant, evoking a sense of the divine hovering over the chaos of the unformed universe. Finally, God speaks, and light is created, followed by a sense of approval when God sees that it is good.

The lyrics to "In the Beginning" can be seen as a spiritual meditation on the nature of creation and the power of the divine. While some listeners may take the lyrics as a straightforward retelling of the Biblical story, others may see it as a more metaphorical exploration of the universal themes of light and dark, chaos and order.
