At the age of 16, while still in the 11th grade, Mike attended the Recording Institute of Detroit (Eastpointe, MI). Taking classes on the weekends (so as to not interfere with his high school studies), he graduated the institute's Associate Recording Engineer Program with a 4.0 GPA.
With Don Cannon and DJ Benzi, he released his first mixtape, "A Matter of Time," from his dorm room at Duke University in March 2009.[3] In July 2009, Posner signed a major label deal with J Records (RCA/Sony).[4] He chose to return to Duke after signing his record deal, and toured on the weekends while at the same time recording for his debut album.[5][6][7] Posner's second mixtape "One Foot Out The Door," hosted by Clinton Sparks, was released on October 27, 2009.
His debut album titled 31 Minutes to Takeoff produced by Eric Barker was released August 10, 2010.[8] The first single from the album, "Cooler Than Me," as of July 3 had climbed the Billboard Hot 100 to reach No. 6.[9] He performed at Bonnaroo and the 2010 Warped Tour in the summer. A second single, "Please Don't Go," was issued on July 20, 2010. Posner also performed his hit song "Cooler Than Me" on America's Got Talent on July 28, 2010. He also performed at John Barleycorn in Schaumburg IL, on July 31st. He also performed the hit on Live with Regis and Kelly on August 3rd, and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on August 4. He performed "Cooler Than Me" on the Wendy Williams Show Aug. 5, 2010, and on Jay Leno Aug 9, 2010.

I would already have you up under my arm
I used up all my tricks, I hope that you like this
But, you probably won't, you think you're cooler than me
You got designer shades just to hide your face
And you wear 'em around like you're cooler than me
And you never say hey, or remember my name
And it's probably 'cause you think you're cooler than me
You got your high brow, shoes on your feet
And you wear 'em around like it ain't shit
But you don't know the way that you look
When your steps make that much noise
Shh, I got you all figured out
You need everyone's eyes just to feel seen
Behind your make up nobody knows who you even are
Who do you think that you are
If I could write you a song to make you fall in love
I would already have you up under my arm
I used up all my tricks, I hope that you like this
But, you probably won't, you think you're cooler than me
You got designer shades just to hide your face
And you wear 'em around like you're cooler than me
And you never say hey, or remember my name
And it's probably 'cause you think you're cooler than me
You got your high brow, switchin' your walk
And you don't even look when you pass by
But you don't know the way that you look
When your steps make that much noise
Shh, I got you all figured out
You need everyone's eyes just to feel seen
Behind your make up nobody knows who you even are
Who do you think that you are
'Cause it's your scene, (it's your scene)
I got no doubt
We all see
You got your head in the clouds
If I could write you a song to make you fall in love
I would already have you up under my arm
I used up all my tricks, I hope that you like this
But, you probably won't, you think you're cooler than me
You got designer shades just to hide your face
And you wear 'em around like you're cooler than me
And you never say hey, or remember my name
And it's probably 'cause you think you're cooler than me
Mike Posner's song "Cooler Than Me” is a sharp critique of the hyper-coolness of some people in our society. The lyrics refer to an individual who is highly concerned about their image and is convinced that they are much cooler than Posner. He is so enamored with the person that he wishes he could write a song that could make them fall in love with him. However, he notices that the person wears designer sunglasses, has a sense of superiority, and appears to be disconnected from the world around them. They never acknowledge others and make a lot of noise when they walk, without realizing how disruptive their behavior is.
Posner satirizes the idea that having designer goods and being elusive makes someone cooler than others, but instead, it only increases their disconnection from society. He suggests that people like this need to be validated by others and are lost without the attention of others. They wear makeup as a shield to hide their insecurities, but they can’t eliminate the confusion that lies beneath the surface. Posner highlights the irony of those who are trying so hard to be seen and yet remain invisible because their impression management techniques are ineffective.
Overall, "Cooler Than Me" is a witty and humorous commentary on the complex social dynamics of our time, in which appearances are often more important than substance, and where people can lose sight of what's real while chasing ephemeral trends.
