Hideaway
Mike Rutherford Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the day is weary
All the things that we have said
Take on a different meaning
Now the world has gone to bed
I need to feel you near me
Put your arms around me now
And we will stay together
Watch the world go by somehow

It's a dream I thought we might have had
But it's too late, I'm losing you

Hideaway, till the night comes back to me
Hideaway, until the sun comes up again
I will hideaway, till your love comes back to me
Hideaway, until somebody sets me free
You never, oh never know

When the streets are empty
Not a soul is to be found
And the wind around us
Covers every other sound
As you turn the corner
See my light up on the hill
All I'll ever ask you
Is you'll stay with me until

It's a dream I thought we might have had
But it's too late, I'm losing you

Hideaway, till the night comes back to me
Hideaway, until the sun comes back to me
Hideaway, till your love comes back to me
Hideaway, until somebody sets me free
You never, oh never know
Until darling, nothing left to show

Hideaway, till the night comes back to me
Hideaway, until the sun comes up again
Until somebody, hideaway
And your love comes back, comes back to me
Hideaway, until somebody sets me free

Until somebody, yeah, oh never know
'Til darling

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Mike Rutherford's song 'Hideaway' convey a sense of longing, sorrow and the need for companionship. The singer yearns for the comforting embrace of their loved one as everything around them feels bleak and meaningless. The world has gone to bed and the streets are empty, yet their desire for their partner's company is strong. They ask for their lover to put their arms around them and stay with them until the morning comes, time freezes and the world goes by.

The line, "It's a dream I thought we might have had, but it's too late, I'm losing you" conveys a sense of despair and acceptance of the inevitable. The singer realizes that their dream of being with their partner forever may not come true, and they are losing them. The repetition of the word 'hideaway' throughout the song indicates the singer's desire to escape from reality and find solace in their lover's company.

Overall, the lyrics paint a picture of a person who is struggling to cope with the emptiness around them and wishes to be with their loved one to find peace and happiness.

I keep coming back to this track. I am very proud of my arrangement on this. My orchestra sounds great and we recorded it in the much missed CTS studios.

Martin Deville

Best track of the album, so sensitive arranged for strings....

Doug Reed

His voice is not as bad as people have made out over the years, yes he's not the greatest, but he certainly can carry a tune, it suits this song!

Great ballad. Ending slide guitar solo from Mike Rutherford and Daryl Stuermer was sublime. Stewart Copeland on drums. Playing different than normal with The Police was a great touch.

Kevin Leavy

@Martyn Ford certainly sounds like Harrison.

@Martyn Ford George is not credited on the album.

TJRROCKSPONGE No idea! Anonymity perhaps?

Martyn Ford

George Harrison actually!

Sean harding

An obscure song for most. For me, great memories.

I had this album in the mid eighties and loved Couldn’t Get Arrested. Somehow I forgot about this song which I am now addicted to! Very Genesis but with Gabriel’s soulful twist. I imagine Mike smoked two packs and screamed into a pillow for an hour to get that Gabriel vocal distortion. Well worth it.
