Beyond The Horizon Line is somewhat of a concept record, involving a growing fear of the sky & it bringing the end of the world over the course of a 24-hour cycle, from sunrise to just before dawn with the fear the sun will never rise again. The only lyrics sum up the main overall theme; scanning the horizon, sensing something unknown, and feeling the change taking place. An ambient album built from the ground up with loop sources & effects into shimmering walls & minimalist soundscapes. Crystalline harmonic washes resonating from the cold depths of mind & matter. Glacial rhythms & serenity through fathoms of uncharted seas. If Brian Eno collaborated with Justin Broadrick it might sound like this. Majestic & heart breaking.
The debut was released by Silber records and can be found at: http://www.silbermedia.com/mikevanportfleet/ along with releases by Tara VanFlower and re-releases of the Lycia material.
Desert
Mike Van Portfleet Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I surmise just everything, I desire nothing
I need to go back to the desert, so I can feel new again
I need to go back to the desert, so I can feel fresh again
Don't care about anything
Don't care about everything, anything
Don't care about anything, except for the desert
And then I climb from this world
And stand under her brilliant blue
I am cleansed, cleansed by the desert
Then isolation builds, and I want to escape from this desert
Then desolation burns, and I just want to sin again
Hate, love, hope, greed, lust, fate, loss, need
Grief, trust, truth, lies, pain, want, days, time
Fades away
In Mike Van Portfleet's song Desert, the singer reflects on their life and how they perceive everything. They state that they reflect everything and surmise just everything, but desire nothing. They feel like they need to go back to the desert to feel new and fresh again, and that they don't care about anything except for the desert. The desert is a place of refuge for the singer, and they feel cleansed by the brilliance of the blue sky. However, as time goes on, isolation builds and they feel the need to escape from the desert. Desolation burns within them and they feel the urge to sin again. The lyrics end on a melancholic note, with the singer listing all the things that fade away.
The song's theme is centered around the idea of finding solace and clarity in nature, specifically in the desert. The singer feels a need to escape from the noise and chaos of the world and seeks refuge in the desert's barren beauty. They find that the emptiness of the desert allows them to reflect on their life and gain a new perspective. However, as time passes, they realize that this form of isolation may not be sustainable.
