Don't Give Up
Miles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You never dare to make it happen
You always wish to structures
Too many friends on plastic couches
Stop to apologize
I need a break-dissolve the boundaries
Refuse to turn my back towards you
I need excitement, need it badly
It's always up to you
Don't give up, don't give in, don't give up
As long as you want to
Too many hugs - too much attention
I've never lost it all
I couldn't care less about your business
I won't pull down that wall
Anything you want to know
Come back and ask me I will show
You don't have to pay the rest
I've got time-I'll take the cheque
God you know-I love the world
Two cigarettes I'm back at work

Now I now that all turns wrong
I'm not as weak I'm getting strong

Overall Meaning

In the first verse of Miles's song "Don't Give Up," the lyrics describe someone who is always dreaming about making things happen but never actually taking action on those dreams. They have too many friends who are just going through the motions of life, sitting on "plastic couches." The singer urges them to stop apologizing and to take a break from the confines they've set up around themselves.

The bridge of the song - "Don't give up, don't give in, don't give up / As long as you want to" - is a plea for the person to not lose hope and to keep fighting for their dreams. The second verse mentions too many hugs and attention, and the singer admits that they've never lost it all and don't really care about the other person's business. However, they won't tear down the wall that's been put up between them and the other person.

The chorus emphasizes the importance of not giving up, but also acknowledges that it's up to the person to decide whether or not they want to keep pushing forward. The song ends on a hopeful note, with the singer realizing that they're not as weak as they thought they were and that they're becoming stronger.

Overall, "Don't Give Up" is a motivational song meant to encourage listeners to keep going even when things get tough. It emphasizes the importance of taking risks and not letting fear or doubt hold you back.

The Traveler

The reason Miles works is because he's not just another gender/race swap. He's not trying to be Peter, he doesn't even want to be Spider-man when he sees all of the extra trauma and suffering it comes with. He just doesn't want to see anyone get hurt, and he understands he can control a certain portion of that outcome.

He understands responsibility.

FireRedNinja

I love miles morales as Spiderman and it's crazy people want to call him race swap he's his own Spiderman not Peters Spiderman there's some of race swap I don't like instance Velma show style swap but miles is one of my favourites in marvel and media they got miles right making him the way he is He is Spiderman and deserves the respect that comes with it

Taylen Bynum

Most people don't realizewhen the character was made, but today's world view is ruining things

The Traveler

@Taylen Bynum Ok, soapbox moment so please forgive the length of my response. There are so many special interest groups that meaningful messaging in the media (like the convictions around Miles as a new Spider-man and the real-world cultural argument that erupted over it) is often lost on deaf ears these days.

I feel like everyone's in such a mad dash to simply feel important, we're missing the best stories in the process, just rushing past everything that isn't attached to attention farming. Any meaningful artistic conviction is lost, then it just becomes about how "othered" a particular character is portrayed and how that captures the angst of misunderstood people in the world. And that's fine as a premise but back it up with something, don't just ask me for pity and then expect me to relate to that. I may suffer as a black male in America in unique ways, but my life is so much more than that small unpleasant part of it lol. Miles was one of the rare instances where there was actual substance to back up the messaging, unfortunately it opened the door for a whole lot of other characters and series that almost entirely lack anything substantive beyond the gender/sexual orientation/ethnicity of the mc.

Miles was ahead of the new-age curve in terms of character design, problem is that all of the other "progressive" character writers tried to take that curve going 190+mph. I'm just glad Mile's Spider-man has been distanced enough from the "progressively zealous" crowd (and their content) to keep his value as a character from being diminished by cheap politics. Thankfully he's not just "the black Spider-man", and thankfully the writing for his character actually makes him earn that. It's not a freebie, it's not patronizing.

He is as valid a Spider-man as all of the others.

The Traveler

@FireRedNinja He's earned that respect, that's part of why his character works so well. He's an underdog, but he actually fought tooth and nail to get to where he is now. He's a true hero.

FireRedNinja

@The Traveler and that's what make more unique in a way other than Peter he had work harder to get to where he is now that why I like him but they are so many who just can't accept that it's frustrating
