All The Things You Are
Miles Davis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You are the promised kiss of springtime
That makes the lonely winter seem long
You are the breathless hush of evening
That trembles on the brink of a lovely song

You are the angel glow that lights a star
The dearest things I know are what you are
Some day my happy arms will hold you
And some day I'll know that moment divine

When all the things you are, are mine

You are the angel glow that lights a star
The dearest things I know are what you are

Some day my happy arms will hold you

And some day I'll know that moment divine
When all the things you are, are mine

Overall Meaning

Miles Davis's song "All the Things You Are" is a romantic ballad that celebrates the beauty and wonder of a truly special person. The lyrics describe the subject of the song like a symbol of love and renewal in the midst of winter, brimming with the promise of spring. The lines "You are the promised kiss of springtime, that makes the lonely winter seem long" paint a picture of someone who is able to light up even the coldest and darkest times, providing comfort and reassurance to those who are waiting for the warmth and light of a new season. The imagery of the breathless hush of evening and the angel glow that lights up a star only furthers this idea of the subject's otherworldly beauty and allure.

By the end of the song, it's clear that the singer is deeply in love with the subject, and is eagerly looking forward to the moment when they can be together. The song looks ahead to a time when "some day my happy arms will hold you", and when "all the things you are, are mine". Here, the lyrics suggest that the subject is not just a collection of attractive attributes, but rather an entire universe of wonder and joy - "all the things you are" - will be available to the singer once they are together. In this way, the song celebrates the transformative power of love, and the way that it can help us to see new possibilities and appreciate the joy in the world around us.

In conclusion, "All the Things You Are" is a beautifully crafted and deeply poetic love song that captures the awe-inspiring qualities of a truly special person. With its lush imagery and delicate melodies, the song is a tribute to the transformative power of love, and the way that it can help us to see the beauty in the world around us.

Miles was using more or less that lick in 1945 on the Now's the time and Billie's Bounce recordings with Bird. It's quite difficult during the classic jazz era of the 20's, 30's and 40's to determine which lick came from where. Later it's much easier.
