Alone Together
Miles Davis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No choice now, it's too late
Let him go, he gave up
I gave up
Lisa says, "Take time for me"
Dropping him down to his knees
Ah, chest down.

Take me away
See I've got to explain
Things, they have changed
In such a permanent way
Life seems unreal
Can we go back to your place?
Oh, "You drink too much"
Makes me drink just the same

People tried. Felt so right
Giving themselves good advice
Looking down sometimes felt nice.

He knows it's justified to kill to survive
He then in dollars makes more dead than alive
Let's suck more blood, let's run three hours a day
The world is over but I don't care
'Cause

I am with you
Now I've got to explain
Things, they have changed
In such a permanent way
Life seems unreal
Can we go back to your place?
"You drink too much"
Makes me drink just the same

The first time, it happened too fast
The second time, I thought it would last

We all like it a little different.

Overall Meaning

The Miles Davis song Alone Together showcases a sense of despair and hopelessness in the lyrics. The song begins with a somber tone, with lines like "No choice now, it's too late" and "Let him go, he gave up, I gave up." These lines signify the end of a relationship or a desire to let go of someone. The line "Lisa says, 'Take time for me'" is an attempt to find solace in another person, but even that seems futile as the singer drops "him" down to his knees.

As the song progresses, there is a desire to escape the harsh realities of life, with the plea "Take me away." The singer seems to have experienced a drastic shift in life, with the line "Life seems unreal/Can we go back to your place?" They are trying to contend with the feeling that things will never be the same again. They are grappling with change that has happened in a very permanent way. The line "You drink too much/Makes me drink just the same" is a reflection of the singer's inability to cope with the changes and resorting to alcohol as a coping mechanism.

"Alone together."..may the greatest recording of this wonderful tune...the trombone intro and then Miles and Charlie Mingus and I always thought Milt Jackson but obviously not on vibes ...really delivers this feel of loneliness and strength at the same time...followed by "Nature Boy"in the same mood ...I only can compare it with Karen Krog's version which was unique as well....a musical monument forever

Excellent interpretation of this tune by one of the best trumpet player ever. Could it be possible to remove the image, the quality been so bad, it is desagreable to look at it really.
