Miles Davis Feat. Sonny Stitt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blue moon you saw me standing alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own
Blue moon, you knew just what I was there for
You heard me saying a prayer for
Someone I really could care for
And then there suddenly appeared before me
The only one my arms will ever hold
I heard somebody whisper "Please adore me"
And when I looked, the moon had turned to gold!
Blue moon!
Now I'm no longer alone

Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own

Overall Meaning

The song "Blue Moon" is about longing for someone to love and finding that special person unexpectedly. The opening lines have the singer speaking directly to the moon, as if it is a confidante. The moon is a recurring symbol of loneliness in many songs, and in this one, the singer is "standing alone" with "no dream in my heart" and "no love of my own." The repetition of the phrase "blue moon" creates a sense of melancholy and isolation.

As the song progresses, the singer reveals that they are praying for someone to love, someone they can "really care for." Then, suddenly, that person appears before them, and they are the only one the singer will ever hold. The moon seemingly transforms from blue to gold, which could represent how the person the singer has been seeking fills the emptiness in their heart. The final lines of the song signify that the singer is no longer alone and has finally found love.

Overall, "Blue Moon" is a romantic song that speaks to the universal desire for love and companionship. The imagery of the moon adds an element of poetry and beauty to the lyrics, while the repetition of the phrase "blue moon" creates a sense of wistfulness and yearning.

Sonny Stitt : a true giant of jazz. The only saxophonist who was a master on both alto and tenor. Unequalled in this respect.

I agree that Stitt was a step ahead of other guys who doubled. Sonny always brought both horns and would switch every tune, or sometimes in the same tune. The only other guy who had such a total indifference about which of the 2 horns he chose to excel on was Oliver Nelson. Unfortunately, Oliver didn't record or play nearly as much as he might have due to his many assignments as an arranger.

Luca Giordano

One of the smoothest sax

@Eric Johnson Coltrane sucks compared to Sonny when talking about melodic playing.

Eric Johnson

Well... John Coltrane.

I just love listening to these guys play. Sonny influenced my playing as much as anyone else. Fortunately, I did get to see Mr. Stitt live at a little jazz joint here in Toronto. That would have been the late 70's. I was an enthusiactic young tenor player at the time. I'm grateful for that.
