Darn That Dream
Miles Davis and His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Darn that dream, I dream each night
You say you love me and you hold me tight
But when I awake, you're out of sight
Oh, darn that dream

Darn your lips, darn your eyes
They lift me high above the starry skies
Then I tumble out of paradise
Oh, darn that dream

Darn this one track mind of mine
It can't understand that you don't care
Just to change the mood I'm in
I'd welcome a nice ol' nightmare

Darn that dream and bless it, too
Without that dream, I never would have you
But it haunts me and it won't come true
Oh, darn that dream

Darn that dream and bless it, too
Without that dream, I never would have you

But it haunts me and it won't come true
Oh, darn that dream

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Miles Davis and His Orchestra's song "Darn That Dream" convey the frustrations and anxieties of unrequited love. The singer expresses his dismay towards a recurring dream that teases him with the illusion of love, only to wake up to the crushing realization that it was just a dream. He curses the dream for tantalizing him with the prospect of happiness and then snatching it away. The song is a melancholic reflection on the pain that comes with unrequited love and the sadness of never being able to fully realize a dream.

The lyrics also speak to the power of dreams and their ability to shape our lives. The dream in question is both a source of frustration and a blessing- without it, the singer never would have met the person he loves. At the same time, the dream is a constant presence in his life, haunting him and reminding him of what he cannot have. The repetition of the phrase "darn that dream" throughout the song highlights the singer's frustration and deep-rooted sense of longing.

Overall, "Darn That Dream" is a poignant and introspective song that captures the bittersweet nature of unrequited love. It is a reminder that while dreams can bring us joy and hope, they can also be a source of pain.

Such a beautiful arrangement. Don't remember who it was but the liner notes said the songs on birth of the cool were rescued from the dust of a vault by a single man. What a gift he had the wisdom to know this jewel!

@wenting2457

Darn that Dream was hardly a dusty tune, it was an incredibly popular standard in the 40s just before and as this album was being recorded. That was likely a metaphor for the rearrangement giving a tired old song a new freshness to it.

Would this perhaps be Ryan Truesdell? In recent years he obtained the original scores and has his own group which will play them once again on occasion.

@grandpa7673

The arranger was the great gerry mulligan, he went on to record his own version.

@@grandpa7673 ...and it was a thing of beauty.

@ustwoalberts

so achingly evocative- and as mr. luczkiewicz writes, a beautiful arrangement

@nesseq

A perfect song!

@gaggle57

Interestingly, this album was originally marketed as "pre birth of cool," because I had a copy of it, (from France,) from over 40 years ago....
"Avant la naissance de cool."
