Bottom Of The Ocean
Miley Cyrus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's been in the past for awhile
I get a flash and I smile
Am I crazy
Still miss you baby
It was real
It was right
But it burned too hot to survive
All that's left
Is all these ashes

Where does love go
I don't know
When it's all said and done
How could I be losing you forever
After all the time we spent together
I had to know why
I had to lose you
Now you just become
Like everything I'll never find again
At the bottom of the ocean

Do do do, do do do do
Do do do, do do, do
Do do do, do do do, do

In a dream you appear
For awhile you were here
So I keep sleeping
Just to keep you with me
I draw a map
Connect the dots
With all the memories that I got
What I'm missing
I'll keep reliving

Where does love go
I don't know
When it's all said and done
How could I be losing you forever
After all the time we spent together
I had to know why
I had to lose you
Now you just become
Like everything I'll never find again
At the bottom of the ocean

This is it
Let go
Breathe
You don't have to love me for me
To baby ever understand
Just know I love the time we both had
And I don't ever wanna see you sad
Be happy
And I don't wanna hold you
If you don't wanna tell me
You love me babe
Just know I'm gonna have to walk away
I'll be big enough for the both of us to say
Be happy

Do do do, do do do do (be happy)
Do do do, do do, do (be happy)
Do do do, do do do, do (be happy)

Mmhmm, be happy

Overall Meaning

The song "Bottom Of The Ocean" by Miley Cyrus explores the idea of lost love and the aftermath of a breakup. The lyrics suggest that the relationship ended because it burned too hot to survive. The singer reminisces about the time they spent with their former partner and questions where love goes after a breakup. The line "Now you just become like everything I'll never find again at the bottom of the ocean" suggests that the love they shared will remain a distant memory, lost forever.

The second verse talks about how the singer dreams about their former partner, wanting to keep them with them even though they are gone. They draw a map connecting the dots of their memories as a way to keep reliving what they had. But in the end, they realize that they have to let go and move on. The chorus repeats the question of where love goes and emphasizes the pain of losing someone after spending so much time together.

2:15 Try this mashup I came up with.

Don't go chasing waterfalls,
Please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you're used to

(Be happy)

Gonna have it your way or nothing at all,
But I think you're moving too fast

(Be happy)

I always thought this song was surprisingly deep and mature for a young teenager to have written it. I'm in my 20's now and the lyrics still ring as true as ever. Kudos to Miley.
