Pablow the Blowfish
Miley Cyrus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How can I love someone I never touched?
You lived under the water, but I love you so much
You never been on land, and you never seen the sky
You don't know what a cloud is
Why does everything I love have to die?
They all wanted to see you be as big as you could be
But I couldn't let that be
By keeping you small, meant keeping you safe
If I could do it again, I'd release you to sea
'Cause I can't bear to see
Something so wild just die in a tank

And Pablow the blowfish
I miss you so much
And Pablow the blowfish
I miss you so bad

On Saturday night, we all went out to eat
But I can never decide, so someone chose sushi
I got soup, and I ordered rice
But watching my friends eat my friends ruined my appetite

Oh, Pablow the blowfish
If they only knew you like I do
They'd love you too
And Pablow the blowfish
I miss you so bad

I won't forget, even one second we had
'Cause you might be gone, but you could never be dead
I heard of a seahorse named Sadie
I heard she was quite the lady
Maybe you'll find her and you could make babies
That'd be kind of crazy

If Pablow the blowfish
Found love deep in the sea, then that would mean that
Pablow the blowfish
Is better off than here with me

But Pablow the blowfish

I miss you so bad
Damn

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Miley Cyrus's song Pablow the Blowfish convey a complex mix of emotions towards a beloved pet who has passed away. The song tells the story of a blowfish named Pablow, who was loved dearly by the singer despite never having met him on land. The opening lines of the song express the struggle of loving someone who was never physically present, as Pablow lived underwater. Despite this, the singer affirms her love for Pablow by saying "I love you so much."

However, the song becomes more complicated when the singer reflects on the fact that Pablow was kept in a tank, and despite everyone else wanting to see him grow to his full potential, she chose to keep him small to keep him safe. The singer realizes that this decision was wrong and regrets it, wishing she had set Pablow free to live in the ocean. The chorus of the song repeats the haunting refrain "Pablow the blowfish, I miss you so much," emphasizing the depth of the singer's sadness and regret.

Later in the song, the singer goes out to eat with friends and orders sushi, but loses her appetite when she thinks about her friends eating her friends. She laments that if only her friends knew Pablow as she did, they would love him too. The final verse of the song introduces the possibility that Pablow has found love with a female seahorse named Sadie and the singer muses on the possibility of them having babies.

Honestly this song is probably one of my favorites by Miley. You could really hear the guilt she had over keeping Pablow tanked up. When she stared crying it hurt me to my core thinking that a lot of people think she's extreme for writing a song about a fish or just wrote it to be weird, but it doesn't matter that its a fish because just because he was a fish doesn't mean he meant any less to her. The way she sung it really showed how little people think about the animals on the plate as an individual being oufff my heart

When I was 17 I had a goldfish named Romeo. He was the sweetest. When I would come into my bedroom where he lived, he would get excited and swim around his bowl bc he knew I was going to feed him. I have always believed we’ve had an understanding of each other. I would always talk to him. Oh Romeo, how I miss you so so much.
