Michigan
Milk Carton Kids The Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The clouds move over Pontiac skies
Their silent thunder matches mine
I know this feeling from long ago
I wondered was it's gone? now I know

So when she calls don't send her my way
When it hurts you'll know it's the right thing
Michigan's in the rearview now
Keep your hands where I can see them
You took the words right out of my mouth
When you knew that I would need them
What am I supposed to do now
Without you
Without you

It's unannounced like you'd expected
Among broke down break lines and Motown records
And all that's left is a blind reflection
But you know what's coming and you regret it

So when she calls don't send her my way
When it hurts most it's the right thing

Michigan's in the rearview now
Keep your hands where I can see them
You took the words right out of my mouth
When you knew that I would need them
What am I supposed to do now
Without you
Without you

Michigan's in the rearview now
Keep your hands where I can see them
You took the words right out of my mouth
When you knew that I would need them
What am I supposed to do now

Without you
Without you

Overall Meaning

In Milk Carton Kids' song "Michigan," the singer reflects on a feeling he has had for a long time as he drives away from Michigan, leaving his past behind. The clouds moving over Pontiac skies and their silent thunder that matches his is a metaphor for his internal struggle. The singer is feeling lost and unsure of what to do now that he has left Michigan, wondering if he has left behind the feeling that he had from long ago. The refrain "Michigan's in the rearview now" reinforces the idea of the singer leaving the past behind and moving on.

The singer seems to be struggling with the decision to leave his past behind in Michigan, and the lyrics suggest someone he cares about reaching out to him, but he knows that it is not the right decision for him to return. He urges the person not to send anyone his way and to let him deal with the pain on his own. The lyrics suggest that leaving Michigan was a painful decision, but it was the right thing to do.

My husband moved to Indiana from Detroit to marry me. Shortly thereafter I delivered our miracle son (his first child). He had been told his whole life that he couldn’t have kids. My son was delivered two months early by emergency c-section due to my severe preeclampsia. We visited him in the hospital every day until we brought him to our new home. Long story short, my husband became very ill and was in and out of hospitals for the next year and a half up until his death 3 months ago. He loved his home state and missed it very much, but he came here for love and to raise his son in the short amount of time he was given. He was an amazing father, my best friend, and soul mate...gone too soon. I traveled up to Detroit a few weeks ago to retrieve some of the things he left in a storage unit and thought of this song on my return home. “Michigan’s in the rear view now...what am I supposed to do now—without you?” Good question. I’ll try my best to keep his memory alive for our son, and think upon the good times we shared, for the all-too-short time that we were bound together on this earth. I believe I will see him again one day in the place where every tear shall be wiped away. Where faith, hope and love remain...and the greatest of these is Love. RIP, Michael. Fulton and I love you more than you could ever imagine. ♥️

I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my mom recently to cancer. Your words broke my heart and I couldn't make it through all of them before the tears started pouring out. Again I am very sorry for your loss. May God bless you and your son.

I'm so sorry for your loss. You obviously gave him the very best things in life; true love with his soul mate and a beautiful boy. His last days would have been joy. The best gifts ever. You will see him again I'm sure.
