An Encyclopedia
Milo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What is that? What is this? What is this? Huh?
This is an encyclopedia containing the Latin names of the ugliest parts of my insides
I'm choosing to use it like a compass in times of peril
No one taught me the language of rap song, I was born speaking it
My last name means "blacksmith," and yours?
Oh yeah, I'm not a scofflaw either
Born from the racial tensions between nigger rigs and MacGyvers
The difference between quantum leap and sliders
That is if you have an eye for
The mid-nineties Sci-Fi sitcom
Used to listen to Myka 9 rib songs
And think "Gee mom, this seems strong, good."
Rap song writing, qua black art aspiring
Now I only write in green ink like Matrix code
Peace to the Wahoo Monastery

My destiny is to write four bars
In black licorice
Convert that to one stack
Then set out to redefine the term "nigger rich"
I'm very hungry
Done asking for table scrapplings
From neighbors who live just above me
Trapping seems in the vein of hunting
I abstain from only the one thing
I'm so sorry, how could I be so clumsy
To thrust you inside a language game
Without affording the proper trumpeting?
Might make a beat from machete metal clang
I mastered the yeti ghetto slang
Like nicknames of nimble and tip of nipple metal fangs
Milo last seen with a poor sport with more ass
Got a passport to import more for the war stash
Short leash, long lash
Long Beach with bombast
I palm palm trees in my thought path
This is a mason jar containing a last laugh
It isn't at all clear to me why I should be alive
Kenny Segal's drums are not quantized
And presently that gives me purpose
I know it's worthless and worthwhile
And how to build a fortress
And I've always known
And then he opened his mouth so wide all his teeth were showing:
Rows, pews, banquet halls of teeth, and he goes
"I've got this one song, it sounds like;
I've got this one song, it sounds like"

People of color coloring
(Hey! You can't do that!)
People of color coloring

Today they shook me down to my core
It's nigger killer galore out there
The truth is a golden rectangle I tried to swallow
Look at the mouth tears, my nigga
I'm really out there
All five fifths of my personage
What kind of burden could be worse than this?
How can I carry all these dead people of color?
All these black and brown and yellow bodies
Darrien Hunt cosplaying was killed for his hobbies
And I love Mugen too
And that's the thing
I love Mugen too
They gave us Mavis Beacon and slavish deacons
Who predicate upon
Who pontificate upon
Who conversate upon
But never hand-grenade a palm
They find refuge muttering
"The patriarchy is on auto-pilot"
With prayer beads and solemnity
We, Urban Outfitters, would like to make a t-shirt
Out of your just-born soliloquy

People of color coloring
(Hey! You can't do that!)
People of color coloring

And the raw amount of psychic data that I fail to process
Staring at Cinnamon Toast Crunch boxes
And the raw amount of psychic data that I fail to process
Staring at Cinnamon Toast Crunch boxes

People of color coloring
(Hey! You can't do that!)

Overall Meaning

In Milo's song An Encyclopedia, he reflects on his experiences as a person of color in America, the weight of societal burdens he carries, and the language of rap music. He uses the metaphor of an encyclopedia to describe the reality of his inner turmoil and how he relies on it as a guide during times of trouble. Milo remarks that he was born speaking the language of rap, as if it were innate to him, and that he uses it as a compass to navigate life's difficulties. He reveals that he comes from a background of racial tensions, between "n****r rigs and MacGyvers," perhaps pointing to the lack of upward mobility available to certain groups of people. Milo touches on the loneliness he feels as he ascends to greater heights, where he can no longer depend on others for support, saying that he is done asking for "table scrapplings."

The song expresses the alienation that many people of color face in society. Milo says that he wants to redefine the term "n****r rich" by writing four bars in black licorice and converting that to one stack. He appears to be saying that he wants to use his talent to create a new definition of that term, one that defies the negative connotations that have been built up around it. However, he also acknowledges the challenges he faces in doing this; he mentions how people tried to shake him down to his core and how they are "n****r killer galore out there." Milo seems to be aware of the danger he faces as a young, talented individual from a marginalized group, making his rise to fame all the more precarious. The final lines of the song center around the idea that Milo's last name means "blacksmith," again driving home the idea that he was born to create something beautiful, but that he is also carrying an enormous weight with him wherever he goes.

Overall, An Encyclopedia is a complex, multilayered song that explores themes of societal oppression, loneliness, and the power of language in shaping our understanding of the world.

I'll admit that this isn't completely game-changing, but to call this vapid is surely the result of an oversight...right? While this song's subject matter has been discussed before, it doesn't occur often, especially in the form that it is presented here. Beat poetry + hip hop? Definitely not trite, at least in my opinion.

I do suppose that the lack of a true climax leaves room for boredom, but I don't believe that this song was written to be a sub-woofer burstin', head-bobbing, neighbors-calling-the-cops-on-you party track. It's simply for a different type of listening.

Honest question: What are some examples of tracks that you find to be stimulating? I'm a noob to hip-hop, and I would love to expand my collection.

Thanks.
