White Lies
Milo Greene Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Time won't lie
I've suspected this for too long
I'm done trying
To convince you I'm worth holding on

And it's not right
To keep on leading me on
(It's a shame) it seems wrong
To give up on what we've done
You've wasted
What could have been
Things will never change

Don't be so surprised
I'm no longer hiding
From now on I won't try
I'll just be your white lie

I conform
How is it that you're never forlorn?
And I'm thinking w was not the fool here
Was I?
I was not the fool here

And it's not right
To keep on leading me on
What I give is in return
(It's a shame) it seems wrong
To give up on what we've done
You've wasted
What could have been
But things will never change

Don't be so surprised
I'm no longer hiding
From now on I won't try
I'll just be your white lie

It still seems wrong
To spend so long getting lost
Then I come to find out
I was such a fool
And I never saw it coming

Don't be so surprised
I'm no longer hiding
From now on, I won't try
I'll just be your white lie

No longer hiding
No longer hiding
No longer hiding
No longer hiding

No longer hiding
No longer hiding

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Milo Greene's "White Lies" are about a relationship that has run its course, with one person trying to hold onto what they have while the other has already given up. The singer expresses frustration and hurt, having suspected for some time that their partner is not fully invested in the relationship. They are tired of trying to convince their partner of their worth and the value of the relationship. The chorus uses the phrase "white lie" to describe the singer's willingness to accept the status quo even though he knows it's not right, to avoid conflict and spare his partner's feelings.

The second verse adds some complexity to the situation, as the singer questions whether he was the fool for assuming their partner was as invested in the relationship as he was. The lines "I conform / How is it that you're never forlorn?" suggest that the singer has changed himself to fit into the relationship, while his partner has remained distant and unemotional. The singer acknowledges that he wasted a lot of time and effort on something that was never going to work out, but ultimately chooses to accept the situation and be his partner's "white lie."

Overall, the song portrays a bittersweet acceptance of an unhappy situation, with the singer recognizing that he has been misled but choosing to avoid causing any more pain by speaking up. The repeated refrain of "no longer hiding" suggests that the singer is finally ready to be honest with himself and move on.

I loved the first album as much as the next guy, and the sunny folksy music did rock a hell of a lot. But that was like three years ago, right? Aesthetics change. This is still gold. And there are several nods to their old style-- it's still a little ephemeral, breezy. The back up vocals are still SICK. I'm glad they didn't lose that.
To all the people who are discontented by the change, listen to the song: "don't be so surprised, I'm no longer hiding". There you have it folks.

Really great music from my favorite band, hope y'all have a great year. And next time, please don't make us wait so long for a new album please lol

@TheRacingWind I'm glad at least someone is positive. How could we call ourselves fans if we don't respect their artistic progress and evolution? Even though it has a pop-like ring to it, they have still made it their own and gave it their touch.

Love the new sound! Can't wait for the album!

Because I enjoy that 80's electro pop sound, I am cool with this direction. I can understand how one might be disappointed by this, especially if you can't appreciate this style of music. There is a wholesome spirit about the first album, which speaks to my soul. Every single track was gold in my opinion - something that would be hard to match again. I am looking forward to what else is on it.

While I really do like their first album, I keep hearing THIS song in my head. I have hope that there will be amazing songs on this next album. I would of loved to see another version of their first but that version of Milo Greene isn't gone. I am interested to hear this next album and hope for the best for the wonderful band. Good job on trying something new, it was a risk.
