It's the Talk of the Town

We were more than sweethearts,
It's so hard to understand.
Don't know why it happened,
Don't know how it started,
Why should we be strangers,
After all we planned.
I can't show my face,
Can't go anyplace,
People stop an' stare,
It's so hard to bear,
Everybody knows you left me,
It's the talk of the town
Every time we meet,
My heart skips a beat,
We don't stop to speak,
'Though it's just a week,
Everybody knows you left me,
It's the talk of the town
We send out invitations,
To friends and relations,
Announcing our weddin' day
Friends and our relations,
Gave congratulations,
How can you face them?
What can you say?
Let's make up sweetheart,
We can't stay apart,
Don't let foolish pride,
Keep you from my side,
How can love like ours be ended?
It's the talk of the town
How can you face them?
What can you say?
Let's make up sweetheart,
We can't stay apart,
Don't let foolish pride,
Keep you from my side,
How can love like ours be ended?
It's the talk of the town, hm
It's the talk of the town.
The lyrics to Milt Buckner's song "It's the Talk of the Town" describe a couple who were once deeply in love and had made plans for their future together. However, for reasons unknown to the singer, their relationship ended and now they can barely face each other. Their breakup has become the gossip of the town, and everyone seems to know about it, making it even more difficult for the couple to move on.
The first two stanzas express the confusing emotions of the singer after the breakup. They are struggling to understand how things could have fallen apart when they were more than just lovers or sweethearts, and they're struggling to move on when it seems that everyone around them is talking about their failed relationship. The third stanza references their failed wedding and the congratulations they received from friends and family. Now the singer wonders how they could face these people after their relationship has ended.
The final stanza sees the singer calling out to their former partner to reconcile. They don't want to let pride get in the way and want to get back together because their love was something special. The repeated phrase "How can love like ours be ended?" emphasizes the depth of their emotions.
