'Round Midnight
Milt Jackson & John Coltrane Lyrics

It begins to tell
'Round midnight, midnight
I do pretty well, till after sundown
Suppertime I'm feelin' sad
But it really gets bad
'Round midnight

Memories always start 'round midnight
Haven't got the heart to stand those memories
When my heart is still with you
And ol' midnight knows it, too
When a quarrel we had needs mending
Does it mean that our love is ending
Darlin' I need you, lately I find
You're out of my heart
And I'm out of my mind

Let our hearts take wings'
'Round midnight, midnight
Let the angels sing
For your returning
Till our love is safe and sound
And old midnight comes around
Feelin' sad
Really gets bad
Round, Round, Round Midnight

The man and instrument in lock step and tranquility, splendid!

This 'Round Midnight Concerto is one of the definitive renditions of the Monk standard and in its lucid harmonic construction and impressionistic beauty one of the greatest musical performances I've ever witnessed. Having said that, I knew Bags' versions of the song from around that time, and still it thrills me beyond words. This is endlessly listenable stuff. It is so well-crafted and logical, the borders between composition and improvisation blurred, resplendent with technical mastery and musical inventiveness. In my head I hear Mark Murphy singing this chef-d'œuvre, while audiences are so in awe they forget to clap. The cameraman did such an amazing job, too, that I will call him director of photography instead. One of the most beautiful videos on YouTube!

On reflection of this clip i agree (mostly) with Henri, in broad terms. The same song was played many times by the MJQ, over the years (it was played on one of their concerts i attended). However, one rendition that stands out for me was the one on the Atlantic-label LP, “The Last Concert” (this was their first) by the MJQ. The one we are listening to right now has a very lyrical, very melodious and (grippingly so) intimate sweetness that TLC has much less and mainly, imo by John Lewis’ approach to this marvellous composition. Also with noticeable more prominent bass/drums. But this live Japanese concert is absolutely incredible and a (i think) LP was issued. I truly miss those magic, inventive Jazz years. Thank you Don for uploading this gem. For all to enjoy and with many Cheers!
